So here's the thing...

Re: So here\'s the thing...

Got to college, get a degree in something you like, have fun...

Worry about this four years later before you do ATPs or similar.

It's not just. You should have done jail time!! Personally, I think that alot of people get off too easily. You were lucky. Accept that, and stop blaming the system!

OK, we won't start a flame war here. Good Day MTSU.

Sorry if I didn't say what you wanted to hear. Good day to you, Sir.

Quite honestly, do what you want, but my final answer would be to do a outrageously thorough background check on yourself before doing any career-oriented flight training.

[/ QUOTE ] So how exactly do you do this? Do you just call a private investigator?

Re: So here\'s the thing...

All I gotta say is, DON'T RUN FROM THE FRIGGIN POLICE PEOPLE. I worked for a police department for a while, and trust me. You run, you go down. HARD. I was involved in a foot pursuit that went less than a block, and the kid got tackled, maced, and forcably detained (roughly). Then I was involved in a vehicle pursuit (I was on a bike pursuing car, after 7 blocks it got turned over to two squads who went 4 more blocks before the stop), which ended in the driver and occupants handcuffed and arrested, but not in as drastic a way as the foot pursuit. It doesn't matter if you run 50 feet or 50 miles, you are still running, and you are going down. Anyways, that's all I have to say about that. Back to your regular scheduled programming. This has been a public service announcement for "tips not to get your ass kicked by the police."

Re: So here\'s the thing...

Probably. I think before I plunked down $30,000 to $60,000 I certainly wouldn't be afraid of choosing to spend several hundred for someone to dig around my background.

There are plenty of places online that you can do all of this. Thank God for the internet!!!

You can do it all yourself...I have a list, but here are things you should look for.

1. NDR
2. Driving records for all states you are lisenced in
3. Credit records from all three (or four) agencies..
4. Arrest records (if think by county)
5. Court records (for each county)
6. FAA pilot/medical records.
7. Training records from each 121/125/125 operation. (if available)
8. FBI criminal record
9 State criminal records.

You should also keep a ten year address and work history complied to give to employers. If compaines you've worked for have gone BK or disappeared then you want paystubs, and someone who knew you at that time. If you were in school, even jr. high in that ten years you'll need that info also.

Some good advice for all of us!

Cops tend to take it personal and just love to kick your butt when they catch you! Kind of like running from a German Shepherd, he's going to enjoy the chase and the tasty rewards of chomping on your arm once he inevitably catches you.

My dad made me watch lots of Cops when growing up.

Re: So here\'s the thing...

Be aware that a court ordered expungement generally does not mean that the arrest/conviction disappears forever from the court record. The government doesn't just shred criminal files. In most jurisdictions, the record will be still be there and still be available showing the arrest/conviction, but with a notation that it has been expunged. Expungement really only means that the conviction can't be used against you in later proceedings (although even that's not 100% true).

The advice to run a background check on yourself is good, but be aware that not all background check services are created equal. One service may turn up something that another does not. The ideal would be to use the same service that the prospective employer will use, but this will be difficult to find out if you don't have sources in the HR department.

Re: So here\'s the thing...

how about this.....you are busted for some weed on a college campus that you got for your girlfriend and her roommate. her roommate has set the whole thing up to get her kicked out of school. you did nothing more than a favor....went down hard for it. even though you never smoked the stuff. charged with ditribution on a colllege campus..but that charge never made it to court. would that fall under one of those crimes listed above? hypothetical situation of course.

(23) Distribution of, or intent to distribute, a controlled substance.
(26) Felony involving—
(ii) Importation or manufacture of a controlled substance;
(ix) Illegal possession of a controlled substance punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of more than 1 year.
(28) Conspiracy or attempt to commit any of the criminal acts listed in this paragraph.

[/ QUOTE ]triple7, in theory the situation you describe could fall under any or all of the above listed sections. That one's probably more cut and dried than evading police capture. There is absolutely zero tolerance on drugs.

Hypothetically, of course ...

Re: So here\'s the thing...

I'm not an attorney, nor an airline background checker. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

The matter had to be disposed of in some way ... charges dropped, deferred adjudication, probation, plea bargain, something. That's the key ... how it was disposed (remember lots of convicted criminals never see the inside of a courtroom, that's how plea bargaining works). That is what will probably show up on a background check.

Hypothetically speaking, of course.

Re: So here\'s the thing...

The charges were "non processor" or some latin derivative thereof. basically not processed.....what would that be considered?

If there's anything about drugs on your record, it's a lot easier to look at another candidate than to dig thru piles of legal precedent determining if the infraction actually qualifies as a disqualifying drug offense.

Re: So here\'s the thing...

All I know is that the FAA and airlines are looking for HONEST people.

Example: A friend in flight school got a DUI 11 years ago and it was suppossed to be off his record. He checked "no" in the box and the FAA found the DUI. They grounded him for 12 months. If he would have checked yes...more than likely, no one would even batted an eye...it was 11 years ago and he has been clean ever since. They didn't ground him for the DUI, but for lying on the application.

The FAA and airlines are looking for people with upstanding character.

If it were me...I would find and aviation lawyer and pay him to do the background checks and get his advice. It will cost some big coin, but he has probably seen something like this before and is in the position to give some real "legal" advice.

Re: So here\'s the thing...

yeah, ill have to do that.

the mistakes you make when you are young...its haunted me more than you can imagine.
