Sleeping in the Jumpseat?

I've had a CA make me a bed with jumpseat cushions on the floor of an A320 for a red-eye flight... plus I once fell asleep with a female Delta flight attendant on a jetBlue FA jumpseat...she leaned her head on my shoulder, so I leaned my head on her head. It was kinda nice... comfortable enough to fall asleep.
#547 on the list of things only gay guys can pull off.

Sure, get your snoozing in when you can. As an ACM, you're an EXTRA set of eyes, not a REQUIRED set of eyes.

I agree w/ calcapt....just don't expect me to adjust what I'm doing to accommodate you.

I'd say generally speaking no.....

Isn't the reason that we're allowed to jumpseat is so that there is an extra set of eyes in the cockpit?

That being said I've nodded off on a trans-con red-eye.

Exactly, many think the Comair Crash in LEX would not have happened if the AirTran guy was sitting in the jumpseat.

Some feel that if there is a ACM on board they should automatically sit in the jumpseat. If I am sleeping and then the crew needs me it could be more troublesome for them to brief me on the situation unfolding rather if I were awake seeing it unfold.

IMHO.......

I've tried sleeping in the jumpseat but I can't, it feels like I'm sleeping in class or temple or something.

This sounds completely insane but the only situation I'd feel comfortable sleeping in the JS is if both the captain and FO were both asleep too. But my logic is that part of the fee for my ride is to provide conversation IF prompted. I went with the flow with the crew, I've been in some where we were talking the whole trip and I remember one trip where I never heard the captain speak once. I walked up to introduce myself and he grunted in a friendly way and that was it. I didn't get the feeling they couldn't stand each other, they seemed friendly enough but both were the very quiet type.

However, sleeping would not have been an issue because in the normal sequence of events, it is highly unlikely the jumpseater would be asleep during takeoff.

If Joe was sitting up front on 3407, it would have never happened, bet your ass.

If the pilots who were tasked with flying the plane actually flew the plane, 3407 wouldn't have happened.

If there were different pilots up front, 3407 wouldn't have crashed.

If 3407 had canceled that night, it wouldn't have crashed.

Where do we draw the line and place the blame where blame is due?

Similar thing with the LEX accident. I see the logic and empathize with the thought process behind it, but unfortunately, the crew of LEX should've been able to not make the error without needing anyone in the jumpseat. Unfortunately, it's a tragic accident any way we slice it. But I understand the though process, and can see how that'd make people feel worse about the human cost of the accident....

Hate "what if's", but it's quite possible he'd have to have physically taken the controls in order to prevent 3407 had he been up front, based on what we know from the FDR of the crew's actions and inactions, and the timeframe they evolved in.

That's exactly right. :D Not only was she hot, but she gave me her number. We hang out from time to time. She's probably one of the youngest Delta FAs.

#548 is getting to feel your female friends' boobies after they've gotten a boob job to make sure they feel real enough. :D

Considerin the slow airspeed decay, a quick "check speed" would have likely been sufficient to prevent the situation from ever occuring.

As far as snoozing on the jumpseat, absolutely. I'd want them awake for taxi, takeoff, approach, and landing... once we get up into cruise...whatever. I'd rather have them alert when we're in a more critical environment.

I've found it quite difficult to snooze in the jumpseat unless i was really zonked. The conversation is typically more enjoyable with the 3rd person up front, too.

I usually try to be up and attentive during the critical phases of flight. I might "rest my eyes" for a few seconds during cruise.

I was thinking along the same lines as Peanuckle here. If I was familiar with the aircraft and saw the crew do something adnormal, I'd speak out against it. I'd be a little hesitant to speak up in an aircraft that I'm not familiar with unless I felt that my life was truly in danger!

Oh no. Straight guys can do that, too. You just have to be REALLY good friends. :)

Yep. I've gotten to be apart of a little show and tell action before and I'm a straight guy. It's funny how women themselves start viewing them as assets other than body parts.

Have any of you guys been waken up by a FA for no good reason while sitting in the back. I was riding in the back one day and a FA woke me up and told me that I couldn't sleep on the plane or something.

I was close to telling him that I'd been behind the yoke all night and that he should probably scram before he sees my bad side! But seeing that it was a free ride, I felt it best to just keep my mouth shut.:)

Wrong.

All that needed to be said was "speed".

I was in the jump for 6hrs coast to coast the other day. I am horrible at sleeping anywhere other than a bed so did not, but it's pretty ridiculous to think the (often tired) third wheel (who's not even required to be there anyways) should never get some shut eye, and instead 'monitor' during the entire flight.

We have an FA that is notorious for doing that. If you are in uniform in the back, even if you are non reving, he'll wake you up. I've had *words* with him before and had a discussion with the AFA pro standards people about it too.
