Slam Click Excuse?

Had a guy want to divert once from GEO due to the fog and VOR mins. The look on his face when I suggested the RNAV instead was priceless! He was adamant that we couldn't do it because it wasn't offered. One call to ask if we could do it and Boom! We were in like Flynn.
@Derg, that BBQ monkey was alright! I heard a rumor that we've been asked to go back there. Seems Carribean Air jacked the fares almost 1000% That's right, three zeros, since we left. Some people in government have lost their jobs over it.

Good! We went in there fair and square, the government subsidizes to guarantee that ridiculous 737 (@Seggy) flown by Caribbean Air a profit, "ain't nobody got time fo' dat" and now they want them back after they jack up air fares.

Whoodathunkit.

I did enjoy the BBQ monkey. And all the mangoes one could eat, or mash and mix into the local rum.

Don't forget the Omni and Atlas 767s flying under the Caribbean Airlines callsigns. Who knows what they were paying us for that. :)

Have you ever left the compound?

I tried once and the guard plead with me not to.
I've actually never overnighted in GEO. We used to do JFK-GEO-POS, and crew swap there. POS wasn't so bad...that Hilton has seen better days, though.

When I was at Omni, we had a mechanic arrested in GEO for finding and reporting 10kg (yep, 22 lbs) of cocaine in a backpack near the perimeter fence. True story.

Weather divert into GEO @Derg ? Ugh that sounds miserable. Can't say I was sorry when I saw that route go away. The one time I went down there I had been on short call since 9a....it's a 1a departure folks! I wasn't legal to so much as reposition a plane from JFK to LGA but I can sure as hell two man it to South America in the middle of the night! Thankfully this is no longer an option for scheduling.

The last time I flew POS, when we were leaving just after dawn there was a divert from GEO landing. I felt so bad for those guys.. 2 man, all night, and legal to go try it again. 117 would nuke that one now, though. Victory!

For the slam click thing: I'm an honesty guy...within reason of course. Every guy that I've flown with at my airline that I don't care to have a brew with most guys have a problem doing the same. They always seem to default to "welp see ya later." No awkwardness, just.... adios. I'm ok with that.

I'm a type A introvert/convert extrovert that needs the recharge, and am particularly not a morning person. If i got up early and we got to the destination pretty early, I'm taking a nap. I like to work out after said nap. I'm all about meet up negotiation as in I'm totally fine with meeting up, but let's discuss the terms. No emotion or connection involved as we are both grownups, pilots, and as such we keep different body schedules.

If we are planning on different things, there is no shame in "welp see ya tomorrow!" We mutually respect each other as professionals, and that's how it goes in layover planning.

Now, my category is very small. There are a few guys on my fleet that I am much closer friends with and as such that is a different story as we'll plan in advance (typically via facebook or phone).

Regardless, there is no shame in slam clicking... just be reasonably honest and cut the BS. This is an industry that requires open comm between crewmembers. If you're doing it all the time... might want to revisit your social operation.

I think some of us are leaving out that sometimes, your fellow crew members may not be all that interesting.

I'm an introverted extrovert or an extroverted introvert and I'm happy in groups and I'm also happy completely solo.

I really don't want to drink beer and nosh on delicious foodstuffs and hear about how your wife's boyfriend keeps wrecking the minivan and leaves his crackpipes under the seat (*), how mad you are about the merger or be lectured about how much sodium is in the dish I ordered and how you restrict yourself to only a single glass of red wine with the Sunday roast, or being compelled to pull out my iPhone to check your favorite sports team scores and talk about how your Fat City Ball Kickers post-secondary defense is clearly superior to the Lion Town Knee Buster's ground assault.

Ehh…

(*) on second thought, that would be awesome. Scratch that.

We start POS next month, and we got a company alert saying, "The hotel recommends that you do not travel outside the hotel after dark." I believe we are going to stay at the same Hilton. That bad? Rumor has us going into Georgetown in the fall. Ughhhh.

Personally, I try to be honest, with a touch of diplomacy. If I want to go out, I go. If not, I don't.

I just had a great 4 day with awesome crews and long layovers in cool places. On night three, I was pooped! I "wussed out" on the last night. They gave me a hard time about it, but I felt a lot better than they did in the morning!!!

If you go in a group at night near the hotel, it's really no worries. I've gone down to the tents on the Savannah for good local food at night, and never felt unsafe. Daytime is plenty safe to go out walking around by yourself.

I hate to say it, but do stay away from "The Avenue" (big weekend party spot down there) unless you, ahem, blend in. I was down there with a predominantly white crew, and we were made feel less than welcome.

I haven't read all 8 pages of this thread but I'm "slam-clicking" right now and the beer tastes so much better by myself. I'm glad I work for a group where not hanging out with each other every night is perfectly acceptable and no one gets their feelings hurt. Corporate is great.

Don't get me wrong- some of us do hang out every night- but we have a wide variety of personalities where I work and it's definitely not expected.

Divergence in the crew sometimes.

I'd fly to Brussels and everyone said "Irish bar!" and I'd rather go find some hole in the wall.

Or in Rome where the other two guys wanted to go to this bar that was owned by a Canadian where all of the cockpit crews met to go watch recorded American sports, drink Guinness and talk "shop". Or passing some amazing amazing German beer halls enroute to go eat mediocre pizza at some place where the stews proclaim, "Oh, they're so FRIENDLY y'all!" by the mall.

Ehh… I'd rather be "that guy", ditch the group and have a local experience rather than sit at a TGI Fridays in Greece hearing about your golf game.
