SkyWest Hiring FOs

Start the clock. I confidently predict that in a year or so we'll have a flood of ex-CFIs complaining about being on reserve, no ugrade in sight, and the fact that NO ONE TOLD THEM it would be like this! :D

Very true. A new hire at Skywest today will basically never hold a line on the jet as a captain.

What do they use to determine if you get the jet or the bro? Are most newhires still getting Houston and MSP?

Never? Why would that be? Are Captains at SkyWest staying put? What about when the majors start really hiring in another year or so? I realize there hasn't been much movement during the past few years.

Unless you are approaching 60 when SKW hires you I'm sure you'll have the chance to upgrade...eventually. I don't see this place turning into Horizon.

If people are wondering about the upgrade there, why doesn't a current Skywest driver put on here the current upgrade times for each A/C?

Jet upgrade is at 5+ish years and about 7 yearsish to hold a line (you don't want to be on reserve here!)
Bro upgrade is at a lil under 5 years and maybe 6ish to hold a line.

The reason why I say a new hire may never upgrade to a line in the jet is that a new hire will have around 10 years ish i'd guess before upgrade and Skywest doesn't have any flying scheduled out that far. ymmv

I am assuming Bro is EMB 120 Brasilia?

[SKYW's Dir of Flight Ops] Shane Losee disagrees with you. He said at the open house he predicts upgrade times will fall in the near term. What the truth is, who knows.

We were told last week that which aircraft you go to depends entirely on the needs of the company at the time. If they are running classes for both aircraft when you're hired, then they'll look at your background and suitability for one over the other. In that case, if you haven't flown anything more substantial than a Seminole, I'd expect the Brasilia. If you're flying turbine equipment, you'd probably go to the jet. If they're only running classes for one aircraft type at that moment, that's what you're getting.

Couple of weeks ago I got an email from Cameille telling me I would interview with them when I got my ATP done and to let her know when I did. Well I sent her an email back answering another question she had about my app and got a reply within the hour. I finished my ATP middle of last week and updated my app and sent her an email letting her know. It's been a week now and not a peep. Should I send her a follow up email, or call her office, or just stop being so damned worried and just sit tight?

All, question about the CRJ Emergency procedures & limitations study guide:

-) Am I supposed to study only the items that are shaded in grey (and that correspond to the Emergency procedures & limitations test's fill in the blanks) or every the study packet in its entirety, from front to back?

Thanks,

~sk

I think the test in class was an exact copy of the practice test in the study packet they sent you, but I went through class in 2006.

I see upgrade opportunities on the RJ for those hired in 2006 and the early part of 2007 in the next 1-2 years. My guess for a newhire would be a 4-6 year upgrade opportunity for the Brasilia and a 7-9 year upgrade opportunity for the jet. You'll get the chance to upgrade on the jet when you reach 20% seniority as a FO so that means you need 1160 pilots in front of you to leave based on a seniority list of 2900 total pilots. If we lose an average of 12 pilots per month during your time here then you get a chance at the 8 year mark. If we lose 9 per month then you are looking at 10 years, but I think we are going to have some very healthy attrition after 2012 so I'd bank on averaging 12+ over your time at SKW as a FO.

From Jan. 2008 through Oct. 2008 I moved up an average of almost 14 spots per month, and I'm sure that hiring in 2013-2020 at the majors will be more robust than back in 2008!

:sarcasm::sarcasm:

...and I have never had any one in management at OO lie to my face....several times:sarcasm::sarcasm:

The "management" in question is absolutely a stand-up guy.

I'd have the grey stuff memorized verbatim and be pretty familiar with the rest. I wouldn't worry about specifics of all the ITT limits for all three airplanes at this point, but at least know what other stuff is in there.
