SkyWest gets dumped for Mesa

Too bad for Skywest. This might be the first loss of a market for them. Welcome to the club folks! One funny thing in the article.

"We have a 30-year history there," he said. "We stuck by Cedar City when we made money and when we lost. We do not want to leave."

Hmmm. EAS route. I didn't think you could lose money on those.

Yeah yeah, I remember laying over in Great Falls and going to the "Sip 'N Dip" Mr. Emerson.

Thats right in SkyWests back freaking yard.

I'm so happy to have Mesa in Utah! (sigh.....grumble...)

They are losing this but picking up a lot of flying for United flying into Aspen with their 700's. It was a worthwhile trade...

Well maybe its good news for me. As far as I know I'm the only 135 in the south end of the state. If I can just get a faster plane on the certificate than a 172. Maybe I'll be flying to SLC more!

It really is "backyard" of SkyWest. I've already heard people saying that SkyWest will still operate even at a loss to still keep those flights into SLC out of Cedar (CDC) because SGU is so full of all the time the nonrevers need a way up to SLC

As for the bid Mesa was $400,000 cheaper using the 1900

I'm sure the bid was cheaper. There's no FA on the 1900, and all of our 1900s are paid for. Plus, with a very cheap contract for MX, those things cost next to nothing to fly.

I think the picture of the 1900s with the Mesa tails is hilarious. It's probably been touched up in Photoshop. If not, that's probably the only 3 1900s we have in proper paint.

It won't take long for us to lose that contract. JO doesn't care about the 1900 flying (or any other) with respect to service. He only cares about the $$$$$$.

I thought the only thing jetwise that could get into or out of Aspen was the BAE Avro thing.

Nope, it was (officially) announced a few days ago. SkyWest will be starting service April 15th with the CRJ66. I've heard it will be severely weight restricted though, 40-50 pax probably, we'll see...

I couldn't be happier that AWAC and their piece of @$%# 146s will be out of my life forever (not to mention their arrogant flight crews, don't mean to offend any AWAC people out there, but wow, what a surly bunch!)

All your base belong to us.

I can't believe I'm gonna use a startrek reference but this company is like the freakin borg. At least if they take over everyone they'll only be one regional and when yalls contract is due next year you can tell em to double the pay or get the stack of resignations.

Mickey Bowman, director of planning for Mesa Airlines, said his company will also need staff in Cedar City and will look to interview all of the current employees at the airport.

"In the past we have quite often given the jobs to the folks who were already in place," Bowman said.

In several markets, we've lost our EAS contract to Great Lakes.

In at least two markets, we've lost our EAS contract to an airline that didn't even exist. Showlow, AZ, is an example. We were beat out by AZ Express. At the time they won the contract, they didn't have an aircraft, crews, or a certificate. Same thing in another market, but the company that beat us there replaced our 1900s with a Caravan.

Also, in another EAS city (think it was Enid, OK), we were doing such a horrible job that the local government petitioned to have us removed, and they offered to pay twice the ticket price just to bring Big Sky back in.

So I can wet lease Fly22's 150 and underbid Great Lakes for an EAS contract?

"State of the art RP's (regional props) with at least a 50% load factor guaranteed for your community!"

CDC Cedar City. We have 4 or 5 daily EMB120 departures there each day. Gone in there lots of times. That will further decrease the EMB lines in the Salt Lake system. That's especially bad news for the guys that have been on "perma" reserve in SLC for the last six plus months.

A lot of the St George SGU non revs take the CDC flights and then drive to SGU. (About 40 min.) That will create more even more demand for the SGU flying, which is usually hard to non rev on now.

Though I believe CDC is EAS, apparently there was some risk as well. I know we rarely had full flights there. In my experience we usually had less than 10 pax on that flight.

152 Sparrow Hawk, Doug, Man why gottsta beez wazten my flava!!

I think i'm gonna go up to CDC with a lawn chair and a 12-pack and watch the reaction of the passengers when a 1900 with 12 different paint jobs pulls up.........

Saw a 1900 with that paint on the PHX ramp on monday.

There was a post on our company board the other day from someone jumpseating home on a skywest flight that read the memo that Skywest Mgmt put out:

The 700 was approved by the feds for service into/out of Aspen. It will be load restricted to 50 pax/or 40 pax depending on weather. (this will bring it down to 60000 lbs operating weight, which coincidently a speed of 130 for the balked)

It will be a VFR only airport!
Why would United go for this? It doesn't seem cost effective to run two CRJ's in when one 146 will do it (and when AWAC owns the RIGHTS to several of the Aspen approaches). Oh well. Maybe the same guy who came up with that idea also pinned the hopes of the company making $$ on $50/bbl oil :cwm27:.

Man, I can't believe this, another town lost for the Bro in SLC. I don't think I'll ever get off reserve!

Ophir. Man you have got to be dying on reserve. I suppose it would not be so bad if you guys got to fly more than once every few weeks.
At least there was a small jet transition class awarded. Hopefully there will be more soon. That would really help thin the reserves. Back when transition classes were once a month I would move up 4 to 5 names each month.
