SkyLens accepting resumes for 2018-2019 season

You are probably the most up to date, getting back to, responsive people that I have ever seen working at a company. It really says A LOT.

Thanks for all the work you put into this that you aren't forced to do. Even the Ops guide was one of the most in depth things I have read for any job I have had so far.

Congrats on getting the call I take it. Looks like I've have to re-try in Jan, doubt I'll hear anything by next week.

Out of all of the companies that I applied to last year, Bryan is the only one to respond at all. That says a lot about him and his operation. I appreciated the response.

Thanks! Interview sometime next week.... Looking forward to it, Bryan seems like a great guy to work for from what I have been told and seeing his responses and stuff just reinforces those statements.

I wish this company had a rotating shift. The amount of feedback and straight talk with no fluff from Bryan is awesome. I have well above all the flight time requirements but I am a married guy with two kids that wouldn’t want to be gone that long from them. Everyone who gets a job there should be greatful to work for someone who really seems to care. It’s a dieing trait these days.

re: rotation - This is something that we've examined to death and opted to maintain our traditional biz model. Here's the dirty secret - besides the continuity problems it causes, rotation comes with a significant dollar figure in overhead. I won't go into all the aspects but besides the airfare and associated costs, there are hidden costs for every employee a company maintains, double the staff, double the insurance, HIRP legally has to be offered to all, extra employees for back office support etc. Guess where that money comes from to pay that overhead? Also - you have the other side of the coin with pilots who want to get as many hours and make as much money as possible. Those pilots make up the majority of available <1500 talent and for them, the rotation thing is less attractive. There are other vendors that do rotation, both Picto and others. I think Sandhills does and from what I've seen, they seem to run a class operation.

I completely understand why you don’t do rotating work. Still “wish” you did though.

You have plenty if applicants by offering what you do right now. No need to change that. Coming from a family that owns small businesses I know hidden costs associated with running one.

@pilotbry - Hey, I thought of another question...

When your pilots are out on the road conducting the picto missions - is it one pilot/plane to a job, or do you have them roving about the country in teams? How does that work?

I can answer that one. Typically you are working the project with other pilots but there were definitely times where I was by myself. It all depends on what the particular project requires, the status of other projects, etc. With limited exceptions, I didn't tend to fly with the same group for an extended period of time either. Longest stretch alone for me was close to a month.

UPDATE: I am going to discontinue processing of applications that come in after tomorrow August 15th. If you're qualified and interested, get it in here now. I've had to disqualify so many due to lack of min required hours or age that the current pool is under a hundred so your odds are not bad at this point. I think I'm going to need about 14 seats for October classes but that could adjust. I'm trying to get interview calls out but regular daily biz issues have slowed my progress. I've hired 3 pilots so far. If I've indicated I'll be calling then I will. It may go into next week. I don't expect to have the entire roster full until Aug 31st. The dreaded Dear John emails will start going out after that.

Are you doing only one hiring wave or can you apply later in the year or start of next year? About to finish up Commercial and then right onto multi.

Currently hiring for the regular season for class dates Oct 1 and Oct 15. There will be another class January 21 2019. I'll start processing resumes for that class right after New Years day.

I Still haven’t heard nothing back yet. I Really hope I get this opportunity and hear something next week. Fingers crossed.

Bryan - Just curious if you prefer to have an updated resume (flight hours) before making your decision? I have already completed and sent the pilot info sheet, but have flown since. I was going to ask in the MEL posting, but it appears this one is more active. Thank you for your consideration and being open with many of the questions asked here! It has been a great resource. Regards, "The other" Brian

Anytime a candidate has had a significant improvement in credentials or flight hours after submitting their resume/application, they should send an update using the previous subject line used with the initial submission.

Thank you for the response. I will hold off for now as to not add more work on your end. I have flown roughly 13 hours more than my previous application, I wouldn't call that significant. Hope to hear from you in the coming weeks!

If it were multi engine hours that get you to the 40 hour mark, it might make a difference. Otherwise, you are correct.

10 seats hired as of yesterday. I expect to hire the other 4 this week. I have whittled down the applications to 20 finalists, however it is not impossible that I reach into the rest of the pool if the final 4 do not emerge from that 20 after interviews. I can tell you that if the following applies then your app did not make it for this regular season class: 1. If you do not have a multiengine certificate AND ALSO do not have previous pictometry camera experience. 2. If you have zero Cessna 172 time.

I received fewer than expected total resumes from last season and I attribute that to CSEL-only pilots holding off. Out of well over a hundred resumes, I only got 13 without a multi cert (that were otherwise qualified). Last year half the applicants were single engine only. It bears repeating that we do not require a multi as a minimum requirement but you are at a huge disadvantage for regular season hiring without it. Once the season is in motion, there are opportunities for pilots with lesser experience to fill seats in case of a sudden departure IF a pilot is available immediately.
