Skidz flight training confessions

Well, there is more. Apparently they are NOT VA APPROVED. Just a tip for all of you out there that plan on using va benefits, check with va first. The school being part 141 does not automatically mean it is VA approved.
This school I'm training at has been advertizing VA benefits on their web site for 2 years now and they were not approved at all. Well, I found that out today. Apparently, they were given guarantees but then Katrina hit and they lost the paperwork. Anyway, I'm still sticking with them because I like the instructor and there really is no other school in New Orleans area that is VA approved unfortunatelly. I don't know why veterans get screwed like that, but they do.

Dude, I'm with everybody else on this one. I did some VA training at a place in Tucson, Arizona that took me from knowin' nothin' bout IFR and got me my ticket in 16 days. They were VA approved, and banged out the paperwork fast. I had money in my account in a little over a month. I did it five years ago but if they're still around I'd still recommend them.

If this place you're at is jerking you around, even if you're loathe to leave.. I'd be tempted to take my money elsewhere.

Not to mention- if they're running you through a 141 program without VA compensation, you're paying out the nose when a part 61 program would likely save you a TON of cash.

In fact, I've seen 141 programs so inflated that even AFTER I reimbursement they're STILL more expensive than an out-of-pocket part 61 course.

Don't let those crooks work you over.
GI Bill money doesn't go as far as it used to.

Hey Skidz- I flew into KNEW this weekend. Does the wind always blow there? It was calm here (Pensacola area) on arrival to knew was 23 knots. Did great but seemed like it was windy all weekend. Fun flight though and great weekend in New Orleans. Stayed at Le Pavillion and would definately recommend. Nice FBO also, can hardly wait to come back. JOE

Let me know when you're comming next time so we can have a proper jc meet n greet. The winds are not always this bad, it's just this time of year I guess.

Weather permitting I am going to try to get back out in a week or so. I will let you know, maybe we can go for a ride or have lunch or something. JOE

That would be great, you know mardi gras is also comming up last week in February.

Hi everyone, skidz here, still working on this instrument thingy :)
Last night was pretty cool, I filed a flight plan to HDC for couple approaches there, ILS 18 and VOR 18, and back to NEW. Right after take off from NEW we got into a cloud layer and ended up on top of it with no references to the ground, after doing these two approaches we came back to Lakefront (NEW) for GPS 18R. The fog was setting in and I did the whole approach in actual conditions almost down to minimums which was something like 640 ft. It was a nice view to see the runway right where it's supposed to be after coming out of the clouds. Anyway, I must have done like 30+ approaches already and the checkride should be close as soon as I get hot on the dreaded faa exam part. :banghead:
uh....forgot to mention, the approaches were done partial panel ;)

Aren't those views great. Clouds, clouds, clouds, runway. Perfect, right where it should be. Partial panel and close to minimums only make it better. Nicely done.

Best of luck, and just keep plugging away. It sounds like you're making the most of a less than ideal situation, so good for you!

Wow. It's been a while since I've posted anything in here. I had a break in training for about a month for personal reasons. Anyway, I'm back and I thought I'd bring this thread back from the dead with an update. I just got done with my FAA written, I didn't have time to really prepare for it as I normally would, but nevertheless I passed it and that's all that matters. I have few rides scheduled next week to prepare for a checkride and hopefully I can get on with the commercial training. There has been some positive movement at the flight school about VA. It looks like they finally might be able to be approved. That means I should get 60% of my money back soon. This money would really make it easier for me to keep going and it would shorten this already long enough time I'm taking to get everything done. Well, I'll keep ya'll informed about everything, take care everyone, have safe blue skies,
Love,

Skidz
:)

Last week I got back into the saddle again and I propped up my shiny Cessna 172 SP into the sky couple times but boy I gotta tellya last night I just sucked. The air was somewhat turbulent and it was hard to keep the headings and altitudes, but I still think that I can't really blame it all on the rough air, I think I just plain sucked yesterday. We went to do a LOC approach to Hammond and then a GPS to Slidell. I just kept falling behind, I had the situational awareness, but I felt I couldn't fly worth of damn. Well, I hope I'll get to have my better days, I got another lesson on wednesday and we'll see how it goes. I'm supposed to be preparing for the checkride, but I still feel I have to get my ducks in line before I do it.

We all have bad days like that during training. During my flight training, I can remember having days where it seemed like I just couldn't do anything right. It will get better. Try to relax, stay focused, and always try to be at least 3 steps ahead of the airplane. :)

I use blogspot

I haven't updated it in a looong time though

oh and, wait til you do NDB apporoaches. I can't stand those lol.

in time, you magically get used to them though, I honestly have no clue how I did. lol

I've done a few NDB approaches with the airplane that had an ADF, since that airplane has gone I haven't done any. It wasn't a big deal, they just make it more complicated than it really is.

I am really stuck, I'm experiencing set back after set back, it's not funny. My original plan was to knock off this thing in couple months and I'm running strong the 6th month now...grrrrrrr  Is there anyone else here working on the instrument rating for 6 months?? I just need to hear it. I am completely ready for the check ride, the thing is that the flight school, work, weather and all kinds of stuff always come in my way. Anyway, I just needed to vent here this time. The way it seems right now I might be doing a checkride in couple weeks and I'll be flying few more times to reinforce the learned material.

Dude everyone has setbacks!;) I've been working on my CSEL since 2005 and haven't flown since May 2006!:banghead: Now that I'm getting things situated family wise, I'm getting back into the saddle and get this thing finished up. The Navy was a pain in my azz as well when I was doing my PPL. I was continuously canceling and rescheduling due to operational crap. You'll get there, don't rush it. How's Pam?:)
