Sketchy September

I'm going to assume that you don't mean this as a serious question, so what's the answer you're hoping to bring out? Nothing? There is no difference?

That anyone in 2015 who can stand on a piece of land, and call it not just a country, but a [insert religion name] country, should be pimp slapped.

You cannot positively change a country, ANY country, until the people (and in turn the elected government) are all 100% on the same page to leave religion out of the governing form of that country.

It is the most important thing the United States got right a couple centuries ago.

Yeah, I agree with most of that. But doesn't answer my question. What do you believe the difference between ISIS and Israel is? Is there none?

ISIS rules by cutting peoples heads of, burning them alive, shock value, killing people indiscriminately, and "assimilate or die!"

Isreal, well, they don't.

I'm in favor of the deal.

It's a beginning, and therefore good (or at least better than losing ground). Detente, SALT I and II, didn't immediately eliminate nuclear threat, but they made the world somewhat safer than it HAD been. The start of a journey is a good thing, and more hopeful (in my mind) than not beginning at all. The world is full of nuanced grays; only rarely is it full-blown black or white ...

I, too, am in favor of the deal.

It's an incremental process. It's cliche, but Rome wasn't built in a day, and sitting around doing nothing (or worse, using force) isn't a better solution.

So just in case anyone missed it, there was an ALPA blast mail put out today that basically stated,

"Don't get your panties in a bunch. This isn't the first time they've done this, and last time nothing happened, and no one was effected. They have to put this kind of NOTAM out because the systems haven't been officially tested together."
^this^

It's like when they didn't allow PEDs below 10,000' for 50+ yrs just because the FAA wasn't sure what the implications were. How many cell phones crashed an airliner???

I'd rather our government working to figure out how to jam and how to prevent jamming in the ADSB and TCAS spectrum(s) before the enemies do and before the system goes live and is ATC's only form of radar contact.

Oh yeah one last thought: is anyone forgetting that these things are just safety nets anyways? ATC is perfectly capable of providing separation without RADAR? My god ya'll sound like that kid in INDOC that ask's five levels of "what-ifs" and the rest of the class is like.. com'on man!

I've noticed in my life that if you can't pick that guy out of a class, it's probably you....

Sorry all, carry-on discussing terrorism, or whatever.

Well, fine, I'll be "that" guy.

I'm not worried about hitting another TCAS-equipped airliner or participating IFR aircraft. For the most part, participating IFR aircraft do the right thing. And participating VFR airplanes too.

I'm worried about having a (another, that is...) zero-feet, zero-miles encounter with a non-services-using VFR airplane who is minding his own business, on Code 1200, perfectly legal on a clear sky day, that for whatever reason, we can't tie in on TCAS, and whose Mode C is intermittent or invalid, or something to that effect.

But yeah, carry on.

Non-services VFR guy isn't required to have any transponder in most places (below 10) in the US of A. Honestly the chances of this military activity having any affect combined with the chances of a non-participating aircraft having a functioning Mode-C, getting in your way but not setting of TCAS are effectively nil. The point of this NOTAM is to report any abnormalities to ATC so that the information can be forwarded to the proper military authorities and they can learn what, if anything, has an impact on domestic aviaiton.

The chances are a lot better that the Russians and Chinese are doing similar exercises without giving anybody a heads-up about it. You're more likely to fly through hail in controlled airspace then you are to experience any abnormalities from this exercise.

I see what you're saying, but you're aware that the terrorists have dark skin, right? Does that change your perspective?

HUGE AMOUNTS OF :sarcasm: for those who don't know me.

Seriously though, well put. I've been saying for a long time that we should never forget 9/11, but we will never move forward as a country until we put it behind us. The only thing that has hindered us more than the attack was our reaction to it.
I think we should forget 911. Most of us don't know the people that died that day, so we don't personally mourn anyone. And the rest of the reasons because of how wonderfully @ppragman put it.
If we could all grow a pair that would be great.

It's perfectly legal to fly VFR without a transponder at all in, what, 99% of the (low altitude, obviously) airspace in the US? What ought to be done about that, do you reckon?

We should tag all birds with transponders. Weather balloons too. And kites and hang gliders too.

About half my time in the air has been without a transponder. Amazingly, looking around outside works pretty well.
