SIU question.

So ILL

Weightless
I have a question for SIU students out there. I'm finishing up AF203 this summer and want to know if I can get done through CFI by next fall? I should be finishing up Av. Mgmt. by the summer but have all the flight certificates to go through. Any thoughts?

well, if you get 204 done rather quickly in the fall, 206 done very quickly in the spring, 207a in 3 weeks at the end of spring, then 300 during the summer. yes.

So if you're one of three people that I know who has done that, you should have no problem... at a normal pace 204, 206, 207a, and 300 should take at least 5 semesters. While Jamming 5 semesters worth of flight courses into 3 is definitely doable, you'll need to be a top student with no life, a devoted instructor, and good luck with airplane availability and weather to get it done in that time frame.

Otherwise, plan on being here a little bit longer. maybe minor in ATC?

Thanks for the info. So much for 2 year program, am I right? lol. I'm pretty dedicated so I'll be out there quite a bit trying to knock it out. The crap weather is the only major concern I have about stying on schedule. Hopefully because it was bad last semester it will be good this school year.

took me about 2 1/2 years with everything and I flew year round, barely took any time off inbetween semesters.
203 and 204 can be a drag but its all about how much you put into it.
fly 6-7 days a week and you will breeze right through it.
I worked on the weekends so it was a little hard to come in beyond the normal 4-5.
I did 207b instead of 300 (310 was fun but becoming a CFI makes more sense in the long run)

If you put your mind to it, and have a little good luck, I bet you can do it.

I got through SIU's Aviation Flight/Management program with my Bachelor's in 3 years flat. All these other people I knew going through the program were struggling to get done in 4 years, many took 5 years or more to finish. I took classes during the summers to make that happen, but I still had a life and didn't kill myself trying to do it. I should also add that I'm no rocket scientist, I just made up my mind to get it done so I could get out there and start making some money and building some experience.

Good luck, hope it works out the way you want it to.

Thanks for the advise. I'm definitely busting my butt. I work nights a carbondale hospital so thats my only drag down. It remarkably works out with 4-5 sessions a week plus full time courses. My 201b check airman told me i could complete 203 and 204 in the summer but I have rapidly found out thats not possible. Hopefully, I'll finish 203 before second half of september and get done 204 out of the way before christmas, realistically. these timebuilding courses could be more exciting though lol... maneuver, maneuver, maneuver....soft, short.

Why would you want to get out of college as fast as you can??? Either way, if you can get 206 done before 203/204 you can file and fly IFR on your x-ctys. That'll help you learn a lot about the 'system' that you'll be in for the rest of your career. Or you can always do the inst. rating outside of SIU and see if they'll give you credit for it. They used to do that, not sure now.

Knocked out my BA in Av Mgmt in 2.5 years and that's with 2 semesters of Co-Op at McDonnell-Douglas (worthless 12 credits on the 2nd tour out there). Lots of 18 hours summers and 24 hour regular semesters (Having the A side of the A&P helped a little), ended up with 186 credit hours including Navy, Airframe's license credit and a few classes I took in the Navy (3). Flying always lagged because of the weather and my class schedule though. Had to always carry flight over to the next semester until I finally dropped the flight major when I got the MDC offer.....

Dispatch would keep us Dual only on a clear day with a forcasted cloud over Nebraska, but send me on Xctry with low ceilings and wind shear +/- 10 knots back at MDH. Go figure.....

haha, I know exactly how you feel.

I'm hoping that 204 gets spiced up when we get the G1000's. Chandells and lazy 8's are exciting for the first few hours, but after a while it just gets so boring...

My advice, for at least 204 and possibly 207a, is to make friends with the PT flight instructors. Usually those are the ones that are trying to pick up every spare hour. So when you want to get that night XC or a weekend flight in and your instructor doesn't want to be there, more likely than not, a part timer will be more than happy to come in. There are part timers who will grab every possible maintenance flight even though they only get .3 or .4 out of it.

Yea, the part timers are great if you want to finish a course quick. I definitely preferred having a pt for 204 as opposed to a full timer for 203. I would even consider taking one for 206 as long as they were competent at instructing...

What is the update on their instructor hiring?
Did they hire anyone, I know it was posted on SIU's site throughout the summer.

They hired 7 new full time instructors this fall, and that was BARELY enough to cover all of the new students. They are still trying to hire a few more in the next two weeks.

sorry to hear about that... I am guessing that they are waiting to hire a couple new instructors before they can assign you. I believe that they are interviewing two potential new hires this afternoon, with the intentions of them being ready to instruct by next week. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything else
