Situation in Brazil

Brazilian aviation is crazy sometimes, just few other:

A Brazilian planes gets AVGAS for 3.1 R$/ L an N reg 5.1 R$/ L

The engine overhaul is not only based on running time, you can have a brand new engine, leave the plane on the ground for two years and ANAC will ask you for an overhaul....???

This one is the best, I met this guy who flew airliners for 30 years, never flew part 91 (here 135 is part of 91), In Brazil for part 91 you need to have and use a CIV (civilian logbook), usually you get one when you start flying, but he strated as military pilot so there is no CIV. This guy is planning to start is own charter company, and he wants to be the pilot on it, well he can't beacuse he can't meet 91 requirements since he doesn't hold a logbook, the guy has 20K hours....ANAC wants him to get all the hours and CK rides that you need for a CPL...

What do u mean by a civilian log book?

I have logbook from my university I log everything the same is it going to matter?

In Brazil unless you fly for an airline (121), you need to fill out a logbook for every flight you do, the logbook here is called CIV, there is one for fixed wing and one for helicopter, when you fly for an airline you don't use this logbook, you are going to get a crew log, and the company will send all your hours to ANAC at the end of the month.

Unless you fly your own airplane all the hours have to be signed by the president of the place were you did flight training or were you rented the plane.

You can't use your FAA logbook here, when you start the conversion, you are going to need some kind of papers from the place you did the training/rental/worked saying you did the hours there (You need to show at least enough hours to meet the requirements here, 150TT15ME for a ME CPL IR). They will ask for this papers, but they are not going to check them, if the hours match....?!? In order to do the conversion Ck ride (there is no Oral) you need to be current in the plane (day and night), you need to put all your hours (the FAA ones) on a brand new CIV, here you don't log it the same way, there is no X-country time and PIC while flying with a CFI.

If you want I can send you a CIV, you can send me a payment on paypal, better start putting the hours on it when you have low time.

Do a lot of NDBs!!! here we have Approaches part VOR part NDB, NDB DME, NDB with localizer...

take care

Swisspilot,

Thank You so much about all the information!
My dad lives in Brasil I asked him to buy a CIV and some IR books in portuguese my main concern is the terminology. I'm fluent in portuguese but I just don't know how to say some of the terminology in portuguese.

I wish english was mandatory with ATC over there!

I'm sure you get used to it. I have a buddy who flies lears over there and he said his transmissions at first were a mix of Portuguese and English. The controllers would get pissed and tell him to pick just one.:D

Swisspilot,

did you get my PM?

And as far as ATC transmissions in portuguese go, a good source to hear some is through the just planes DVDs.

Among their cockpit collection are DVDs GOL, 2 from VARIG, and a new one from Azul.

The Azul and GOL ones are my favorites of the entire collection.... I highly reccomend those DVDs

English is mandatory, but then again it's Brazil!

All the towered airports have English speaking controllers, the airports with no tower but "radio" (it's like a tower, but the guy is there just for safety not really to tell you what to do) they are operated by SINART (not the Air Force like airports with a tower).

in Rio you can do your Ck ride in English...

If you buy the Brazilian FAR/AIM, called ICA 100-12 Regras do Ar e servicos de trafego aereo, in the back part you have all the ATC terminology in portuguese and english, here they use the ICAO way to talk, it's a bit more standard than in the US, the main difference is how you talk on the ground....

I'm about to publish a small dictionary for aviation english-porto porto-english

Swisspilot you are the resident expert here hehe!

So do I need checkrides for all the ratings down there?

No, just one single ride, is gonna be a Multi IFR flight, two approaches (one has to be NDB), some navigation, one single engine landing and you are done

Here what is more is less. So you are going to get a SE CPL too

You can't convert CFI here (and there is no such thing as CFII or MEI, if you have a CFI and ME, IR you can teach multi and instrument). In order to get the CFI you have to take the full course with 80% of the time in a taildragger.

Just out of curiosity, are the majority of the CFIs you've come accross in Brazil career CFIs or people building time for airliners/corporate?

Most of them are building time, but there is always couple of them that already work for a charter outfit on the same field, here in Brazil Corporate Aviation is not really a full time thing, this guys usually teach in the multi.

Flight training is a lot different then in the US, in some schools to do 10 hours you can take up to a month, to get a ck ride done can take couple weeks, usually the ck airman has an other job.

Are all the check airmen from ANAC?

No, but you can ask for one if you don't wanna use the aeroclube one, if you are a CFI in order to become a check airmen you just need to have 1000TT and apply for it, no ride, nothing, just paperwork..

There is only one school in SBRJ, SkyLab, I wouldn't go there, they don't have a twin, just a Cessna 172 (this way you can't get a ME IR PC license), just a SE PC. There are only two twins in RJ, one in Marica (this is the school that gives you the regulation class, SkyLab doesn't), a C310 for R$1200/hour and the other in Jacarepagua, a Senca II, I think around R$800/hour.

For everything you will be spending around 3K $, In order to fly and log the time for your conversion you need all the paperwork at ANAC to be done, at least 2 months for that, if you don't have a brazilian High School Diploma, it's an other 2 months, they have a huge waiting list.

I can send you a list of all the documents you need and the application form.

Take care
