Sierra West Airlines Hiring Lear FO's

I didn't apply and I got through the 1st round hahaha. I had only inquired and they sent me and about 12 other people an email for the 1st interview. It said they were hiring Lear Capts and FO's as well as FO positions for Falcons(10's I think) and the Metros. $250 a week is criminal, I'm sorry for opening a can of worms, but I thought it could have been of some benefit.

Yup, same here - I am on that email. I sent an email inquiring as well. I cordially declined as I would need California - but I was interested in seeing how much low time slave labor costs. (no interest in really doing it as I have a good thing going)

Unfortunately, there are pilots out there that will do it :banghead:

I asked specifically for details of the job, pay, training, etc. Just got the canned response with everyone else -- which is a big red flag being on a mass 'you made it through round 1' email. No details on the job.

Applied and got the email back as well. Sent them all of my info as requested. I'll keep everyone updated on my progress as well!

Does anyone know if that is contract work or regular w-2/4 at the end of a year? I did contract work before, and in cali you are taxed 30% on self employment...

I don't know that much about the company (other than they've been around for a while), or their pay (other than it is not very much). I will say the cost of living in El Paso is very low so to compare the pay of an FO here to say someone in the NY tri-state area or California is comparing apples and oranges. Also the pilots I know on a casual basis or better who work there do seem happy. They do fly alot. You will fly all over the US and Mexico shooting approaches to minimums and dealing with crappy weather. It will be a learning experience.
I do know it is not PFT.
They do hire low time pilots. Yes, there are jobs out there that pay better and require more time... but to get that time you'll need to spend money or get lucky and find a gig as an MEI. Of course a gig as an MEI will probably pay about the same as flying for SW.
So it's out there. It's not for everyone. I would hardly equate it with Gojet. Someone who takes it is hardly a scab.

Appreciate the words. Figure with student loan payments, I am going to be broke either way, might as well be broke as an fo than broke as an instructor...all about building that time...

It always amazes me the lack of self respect most pilots have. Am I the only one who would work at a Lowe's for the twice the pay before taking a job like this? I made well more then double this as a CFI in Archers and about 50% more then this CFI'ing on the east coast. Sad...

So who died and made you in charge of the pay scales? What rate is acceptable for different operations? Is a CFI who makes 50% of my instructional rate (probably most CFIs) sad? Was it pathetic and unacceptable to you when I left active duty years ago and took a drastic pay cut to spend more time at home? Next job I'll be sure to send you the pay scale to make sure it passes your muster.
BTW, I do think their pay is very low- they get in a week what I earned in two days hauling checks... a long, long time ago. But it is what it is and any pilot is free to walk away from it... or take it.

I haven't been able to find a flying job for two years and a parachute job tha doesn't even pay its pilots won't respond to my app. Everyone situation is different on what works for them

I would much rather fly for 250$ a week, than work at Lowe's. I quit a 60k a yr finance job to become a pilot. I am currently making $200-250 a day ferry airplanes. It's been great. But it comes and goes. Sierra may pay low, but I have heard great things about the pilots you fly with, and it's great experience. For people like me that sold off all their toys, to not have bills, living off 250$ a week is manageable. At least it isn't a pay to fly gig. Seen maybe people around doing that and offering free ferrying. I agree that if EVERYONE turned down these positions, they wouldn't exist. In reality, that will never happen.

Just because it happens in other parts of the industry, doesn't mean it is right. A lear FO should be making $40,000/yr minimum. At $250/week that works out to be $13,000/yr. The experience alone is not worth $27,000.

Also, there are other job opportunities out there that aren't CFI jobs. I know someone that is making bank flying a C172 around the country for arial survey. Pipeline patrol, good jumper locations, arial survey, and traffic watch are all non-cfi jobs that pay better than this FO job in a Lear. SJS apparently is > making a proper living.

Industry standard is acceptable. 12,000 dollars a year before taxes is not. Doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure that out.

You're not trying hard enough. Yes I said it, you're not trying hard enough. Even during the downfall I was able to find gigs as a fresh commercial pilot that paid much, much, better then 250 dollars a week.

So basically aviation is a hobby for you rather then a career. Fantastic...how could that hurt wages?

This sums up a lot of pilots in this thread & industry. Well put.

All -- to each is their own. We all have different ways of networking and this is NOT a pay for training gig. We still have not heard what the current pay is. To that end, SIC is just that SIC and how many of us have asked a friend in our network for the chance to fly right seat in whatever.

I am not for the pay scale, but consider it an internship if they will offer someone with less than 500 hours to get trained -- as sketchy as it is. MBA, Law, whatever they range from paying for the 'credit' to decent wages. This is no different in my book.
