Sick Calls

Has anyone on here had any bad luck with sicks calls at your particular airline. I'm pretty sure I got sick during recurrent a few days ago with using the O2 mask and PBE. That and being in the room with a couple of other guys who we're sniffling. I got a 2 day trip starting tomorrow but definitely don't want to fly sick and get the other guy sick, nor go flying and be miserable not to mention unsafe. I'm sure i'm going with the smarter option if I feel like crap tomorrow but was just wondering about sick calls in general when it comes to the airlines.

If you're actually sick, calling in sick is the right thing to do. They are not allowed to ask you why, but some airline contracts can require a doctors note. Most chief pilot offices will not push the issue if you are not a known sick-leave abuser.

Yea I enjoy work so there's really not a reason to call off. That and I set myself a personal goal of 3 or less if possible. Everyone seems to be pretty understanding where I am though.
 
At Eaglevoy more than 4 sick calls in a rolling 12 months puts you on some kind of watch list. If you call in more than 4 you need a doctor's note or some kind of petty nonsense like that.
 
At Surejet we could end up with a letter on file after a handful of occurrences. I believe I got two letters. The firs twas shortly after my first year here. Just getting into that kind of germy environment I think took its tole.

The second letter was just "one of those things." One of the things that looks bad is calling in sick right before vacation. I had a trip that took me right up to vacation. I decided to pick up a day trip out of open time the day before that started. I ended up calling in for the day trip because my allergies went nuts and my sinuses were blocked. I didn't want to call in right before vacation, so I figured out what I was allowed to take (Claritin non drowsy and saline solution) and decided to soldier through the next trip. I got one round trip in before I felt like my head was going to explode and I couldn't take it anymore. Called the chief pilot on the way out and offered to come in to the office and get snot on his desk to prove I wasn't ducking out early for vacation. He told me there was no need and that he hopes I feel better...still ended up being two occurrences since it was two separate sick calls.

Moral of the story, call in sick when you're sick and don't go back until you're well. Trying to be a "team player" isn't worth the cash and prizes that you won't get anyway.

Also, for what it's worth, even with two letters on file I still was able to move on to a non-regional carrier and wasn't even asked about it.
 
Never had an issue calling in sick. I try to be a team player, but it's much better operationally to call in sick as one crew member, as opposed to getting your entire crew sick and having them call out as well.

I've called in sick twice in the past 9 months with AMF and haven't had an issue. I have however had issues come up when calling in sick at a previous employer..
 
When my daughter was diagnosed with type 1diabetes, I was calling in sick every week. QX never made a peep. This was well before I got approved for intermittent leave (FMLA).

I'm glad that was your experience. I got called by management over calling in sick over some reserve days. Sometimes weird things are done.

That's because you're a hack pilot, that's why they had to keep you in ANC...something about making real pilots into men, and whatnot ;)
