should I even start my Commercial?

I think for the most part it has been increasingly harder to ignore the overwhelming amount of dis-content, bankrup, and furloughs. Aviation in a lot of ways is an investment in the soul. It is so predominantly driven by passion and sometimes can excruciatingly hard to be rational. I think I do have what it takes to make it however. I saved money for the last two years and paid for my instrument in cash with money left for at least my Commercial and CFI. It's always harder to leap into such a dark abyss with no guarantees. But I have never doubted that I have what it takes to make it. It was merely exercising my deep analysis on my life and what I want. From all the good to all the bad JC has been where it’s at. Thanks for all the input and good luck to all facing these challenges......

What is your decision?

You have to make these choices for your self.

The only thing you should use the opinions of people from the internet is to guide you in your decision making, but certainly not the actual decision making.

Really depends on what you're seeking with aviation. A career? An enjoyable hobby? A part-time career enjoyment?

Either way, a Commercial certificate is not a bad decision. If for a career, you'll need it. . .and if for an enjoyable hobby - at least your insurance rates should go down. :)

I have definately used JC as a resource to make the most informed decisions that I can. I plan on attending the Network JC even in Las Vegas.I have two other students that I will be splitting time with that I have told about JC and the Network event....might even fly ourselves out there.

BTW, this just in....the regionals are not the only way to build time or make it to the majors. Outside of 121 there is PLENTY of hiring still going on. Well paying too. Corporate airplane manufacturers are backed up for years on aircraft orders. 135 operators are hiring.

Look at Turbomax97, got his class cancelled at SKW and already has a job. Why? Because he has alittle more than 500hrs. The best thing you can do for your career is build experience. Just got a job and keep adding to your logbook.

Guys need to stop fixating on the regionals like its the only path to go. You can always come in later and check the 121 experience box off and head to a major with out even upgrading if you got the other qualifications somewhere else like freight dawging.

So DenverPilot8 stop fixating on the airlines, get the rest of your tickets, and start building some experience.

I decided to pursue Commercial. Still working and paying as I go.....
If you are doing it part 61 you need to build time. If you have buddies that will help pay for gas, go for a lot of $100 hamburgers. enjoy the ride and stay current whatever you do. Good luck!

Can you give us some examples of of all these place that are hiring?
I don't think I've been that fixated on the airlines as much as I've had tunnel vision about wanting to be a professional pilot. Lastely I just said that I'm pursuing my Commercial.

Almost every flight school in the country
Cherry Air
Mountain Air Cargo
Flight Express
Ameriflight
Airnet
Plenty of corporate operators just network

What do these jobs all require? Experience. Build your time and once you get pass 1200 hrs or so you're golden.

When I was getting my commercial, CFI jobs were hard to find and you needed 1500/300 to get into 135 twin flying. I don't think we've regressed back to this point yet, so you could say it's been worse before. I stuck with it. It paid off. I think if flying is what you want to do, you should pursue it. Times like these tend to weed out those who don't belong in the biz. And, certainly, not everyone is cut out for the career. That being said, I wouldn't hold it against anyone if they threw their hands up in disgust and got in to accounting instead...

...great lakes is still hiring a lot. We keep on winning more EAS contracts than we know what to do with. More planes and pilots are going to be needed, plus you get to stay in Denver. I am not sayng go spend 25 grand in 6 mos, but there is always the possibility you could get hired on with GLA next spring.

Just wish you guys paid more. I could never justify the HUGE paycut I would take to go from my 135 job to Great Lakes. Too bad, I bet it's some fun flying and it'd be great to be back in Denver. But I also like having money :D.
