Shortest Runways

[ QUOTE ]
Anyone know what the shortest runway is here in the US? How about the narrowest?

[/ QUOTE ]

I am guessing the name is preceded by:

USS *** CVN - **

It might help to classify that a bit more. Maybe shortest/narrowest runway served by airline traffic? Or shortest/narrowest public use airport?

I've seen people use private land a couple hundred feet long and barely wide enough to fit the main wheels on, but those sorts of places aren't usually published, charted strips.

How about the airport with the narrowest runway, which only operates regional aircraft and smaller, which has precision approaches but no non-precision, which have an AWOS-3, even though they have a Non-Federal Control Tower, and must have pilot-controlled lighting?

I'm just saying, chances are the shortest/narrowest runway is probably private, uncharted, and on the side of a mountain somewhere in Alaska. It's an impossible question to answer.

No, no....I know exactly where you were coming from, and agree with you. I was just ridiculing the original question, because as you stated, without qualifiers, it is an impossible question.

So I laid down some qualifiers.....

I know it isn't, but when you're flying into Larimore, it certainly seems like it :-P. I love that airport :-)

[/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, I was actually just gonna add that to the end of my post. That is a scary runway! 50 feet wide and very short.

Ok, perhaps I should have been more specific:

What is the shortest public-use General Aviation runway in the USA.

ok first off if were talking public use than i must say look in alaska. but then too who ever said that those of us up here need a runway in the first place.

Well lower 48.... the shortest I know served by a regional is Provincetown, Mass.... Out on the tip of Cape Cod. Served by Cape Air.... (sorry shameless plug for my company).... also shortest runway equipped with an ILS. 3500'

But as I am writing this my roommate is telling me that HOONAH Alaska is 3000' he used to fly into.

Here is a picture of PVC

I also like the lighthouse or whatever right off the departure end of 25 of PVC in that pic! Speaking of short rwys in MA- Marlboro is like 1600'- pretty amusing reading some of the comments about it on airnav.com.
15G (Skypark-Wadsworth, OH) is 2300x37' wide, feels like you're landing on a driveway, especially with some crosswind thrown in.

According to my little airport book for Alaska, Hoonah is 2997 feet long, and 75 feet wide. My uncle used to fly in there alot.

Brennand Airport (79C) in Neenah, Wisconsin is pretty small; 2400x20. Because of its proximity, myself and a couple buddies from work who also fly were considering flying there for Oshkosh 2004, but decided against it as none of us had ever flown to AirVenture or into somewhere that narrow. Not to say that we couldn't have done it, but flying into the Oshkosh area would've been challenge enough for the day for a new PPL, in my opinion! Besides, the FBO's airplanes were booked for other rentals!

On my check ride for my PPL I had to shoot short field landings into Skypark. I had never been into anything less than 3500x75 and felt like I was landing on a postage stamp. The length of the runway wasn' t bad but the width was really intimidating. On short final I suddenly became aware of other aircraft parked what seemed like mere feet from the sides of the runway all the way down the the field. Freaked me out for a few seconds.
