Short-field approach speed vs normal approach speed

I don't quite buy into the "it doesn't matte, just land" philosophy. Separating a maneuver into component parts is a very helpful training technique. I have my preference for the purpose of moving someone from the 2D world of driving to the 3D world of flying. But i'm sure the other way works equally well. The problem comes in when a teaching technique gains quasi-religious significance.

From an instructor and training POV, obviously you need to break down the maneuver. If you are not teaching and just going through the motions every day with your job then, "it doesn't matter, just land" works fine.

The the toughest part about becoming a flight instructor is taking the things you take for granted every day and breaking them down to effectively teach someone else to do it.

Push them into the plane. Yell at them a bit and they should get it. If they don't, belittle them and their confidence until they quit. That's how I have always done it.
