Ariat Ropers:
1) Plain toe so you don't look like a total Appalachian-American
2) They go really high up your leg, so no shoe fulls of slush, glycol, water, and other crap on the ramp
3) Rubber sole with actual tread so you don't bust your ass on a walk
4) No laces - easy to slip off in the cockpit
5) You wear them on overnights and your white socks don't show over the top of your shoes
6) You don't feel so silly trying to use a "jet pilot voice"on the radio - actually that's a lack of humility that does that.

IMHO Shoes of that style don't belong anywhere near a professional pilot uniform. Fine for clubbing, just not for working.

If you don't want to spring for the Ariats, my Dockers from DSW have been going 3 years strong and seem to have plenty of life left in them. Around 70 bucks I think.

I'd agree. IMO it should be a black laceup dress/work shoe. I saw a pilot one time wearing black tennis shoes with velcro. Doesn't look very professional.

I am, apparently, old by the standard of most folks on JC (crap, when did late 30s become old??), and my idea of a night on the town has to do with either a live band or a bar with some great libations and some friends. Dancing and the typical club scene isn't my style, that's for sure.
That being said, those shoes still don't belong anywhere near a professional pilot's uniform even if you think they're not stylish enough for nightlife.

But a bunch of guys I work with, who I can assure you are professionals, wear shoes like that to work, and unless I misunderstand our FOM, are allowable.

. Had the same pair of Docs for 10 years, they've been with me all over the world and they show little wear even after using them every single day. Best shoe purchase, hands down.
