Second day of Airbus 330 school

That Airbus will make you scratch your head at least 5X per trip. Don't worry there are guys who have flown the thing for 10+ years that still get confused. How much do you love that FMGC/MCDU?

I like it. It's a very modern aircraft with a lot of great efficiencies but the FMS leaves quite a bit to be desired. But then it's very new to me so I pretty much get the gist.

So not RTFQ?
ADS information only being available in non-radar environments.

The answer is no but they wanted yes. Eh no big deal.

Btw the first instructor is a former A-10 guy.

What FMS software version? Honeywell or Thales/Smith

I'm not too sure, but I will ask on Monday. The new 330's we're getting are coming with a more advanced (newer?) FM package the program manager said.

I do know the one we have is not too smart! :) Well, at least comparing it with the Pegasus package we had on the 767.

There was also a Pegasus FMS for the Airbus. I don't know if that was similiar to the one in the 767. That was the second generation of the Honeywell FMS, now upgraded to the third generation and just known as Honeywell RxxA. Where "xx" stands for your software release number. This FMS has the same, regular keypad, like on any other types. And it has a brightness knob.

The other one is a Thales product, known as Topflight RxxA. Easy to recognize: it has a rubber keypad and brightness/dim keys.

In general: they are similiar, but can catch you, if you are used to just operating one type. The Thales takes some extra key punches to do what you want, e.g. it always generates a temporary flightplan that you have to "insert" (think: exec), when entering a direct-to, or modifying anything. At the same time, it's smarter, like auto-sequencing the secondary flightplan and allowing independent performance calculations.

If you are getting the Thales FMS, ask to get the .pdf version of the Thales Demonstrator. It works as a freeplay FMS trainer, in a full screen .pdf file!

Weird that the Airbus seems to have a much nicer avionics/display setup overall, but the FMS is behind the power curve...

The instrumentation is light years ahead but the FMS ehh, kind of a challenge.

In three freaking years (granted only 350+ hours in the 3 years being the slug I am) on the beast, I still have to think too hard to know which damn arrow key to press to get it to move the flight plan the way I want it to go. I much prefer "next page"

My favorite airbus stupidism is that you can can select a radio to talk on that you arent listening too. amazing. Even in a C-150 you cant do that on.

And they select "out" rather than "in".

The pages work like the iDrive so I can kind of rationalize it somewhat.

I see you're doing your currency ride this weekend, enjoy!
