"Schoolhouse" Rumor

Man, I hope this doesn't happen. Mostly for selfish reasons. I interviewed at HA and was rejected in 2012, although I thought the interview went well. That quickly moved my "2nd" choice (DAL) up to numero uno. If this happens, I probably don't stand a chance...

Both are GREAT airlines and I hope they leave it alone...

After a plethora of other mergers that were rumored to happen.

Doesn't matter. That's not what you said. You said "it's the mergers you don't hear about that happen." That has been universally not true. The only exception has been at the regional level, where PCL/MSA/CJC was a bit of a surprise. But that's it. Everything else has been rumored for years. You're wrong!

I'll take that apology now.

(I know I've used that picture in the past week, but it's a good one. ;) )

Meh... I've heard this rumor since I started flying for Pinnacle in 2008. I've lost count of the times I've heard NW/DL crews talking about buying Hawaiian while jumpseating between MSP and HNL. I'll believe it when I see it.

That said, if we ever did merge, our operating cultures are vastly different and it would be an interesting and frustrating integration, I'm sure. We do have some fairly new guys on property that quietly wish that Delta does buy us. Why they chose to come to Hawaiian instead of Delta leaves me puzzled.

Remember, the "money" doesn't care about corporate cultures. Global Air would acquire Drinky McGee's Feed, Seed and Flying Circus Club if it brought value to the shareholders and fit their corporate goals.

Cultural differences between combined airlines isn't part of the equation at all.

They'll dump that right in our laps with the "You like baseball, they like baseball, see? Commonality, GO FLY" :)

Sometimes your employer chooses you in this business. I would venture a guess that there are more than a few at both carriers that applied and wanted to get hired at the other carrier but never got a chance for whatever reason. That's just the way it goes. Telling a pilot, who had one carrier as their first choice but took an opportunity at their second choice, they should have held out makes no sense.

This. I think I had been applying to Delta for years, had some very strong internal references that I met in the most unusual locations (at my music engagements). I saw lifestyle possibilities at both carriers that were great, the HAL culture amongst employees is superb. I don't know if I'd place one over the other, it's just that Delta had NY basing opportunities (and the German flying that was my career goal). Hawaiian was a different experience altogether, in another part of the world. HAL called me first, and within a month or two, life changed to the islands.

I think had I said "no" just to stay "locally based" in NYC, I would be at a bankrupt company still waiting for Delta to call, wondering "what if." Take your opportunities, build on them. Then if you still want to move back to another carrier, you'll be applying with...more/varied experience!

I'm guessing that when the phone rang, it was Hawaiian on the other end.
Truth.

In 1997, United was my first choice, I got turned down at American and SouthernJets hired me.

In retrospect, things worked out for the best up to this point. Tomorrow, no one knows.

Sometimes I think just them trying to "integrate" the Neighbor Island flying and the World Wide flying is pretty bad. I can only imagine another company thrown into the mix. Half the guys would scream murder about having to shave their beards.

And the hats.

We've still got a large percentage of people who refuse the wear the hat, but they'll carry it around for an eleven day trip just in case they run into a chief pilot.

I figure if you're not going to wear it against the FOM, don't bring it otherwise I gotta sit around the crew bus waiting for you to run back to the jet and grab it.

I find it so odd to be wearing a hat (after not wearing one for the last 8 years) but not wearing a tie.

That was the problem with the seasonal hats at ASA. I was constantly forgetting them for the first month or so that they were required. One schmuck wore my hat all winter, and returned it once it wasn't required anymore in Spring, after I had already replaced it.
