Say what you will, Jerry never did this…

Formation landing… right

Interesting Juxtaposition of the sentri and the post it note…

Yeah…that’s not good.

On Dec 11, 2024 was flying with a couple friends from Galveston to Pearland Regional Airport. I was in the right seat recording. Our plane, a 1973 Grumman, experienced electrical issues. First the headsets went out, then the radio, then the avionics (navigation). We knew we had to get down quickly and made an emergency landing behind another plane with no working instruments. Fortunately our skilled pilot was able to set us down. However with no way to communicate, the pilot ahead was unaware of our presence and stopped fast to make a left turn on the tarmac. With our flaps not operational, we couldn’t slow fast enough and plowed into his plane as he turned. The prop tore a hole in the left side of his fuselage and destroyed the side of his aircraft. Thankfully he had no passenger on the backseat or it would have been fatal. In our aircraft, the impact was devastating with aluminum crumpling and glass exploding everywhere. My shoulder pushed through the window and I sustained slight external injuries. But thankfully everyone was ok. The planes not so much, both are likely totaled. This video captures the moment.”

“…Emergency landing”???

There was no rush. Not an emergency

Truthfully, I keep hoping there's a "rest of the story" that would explain (not necessarily excuse) the pilot's panicked response. For example, signs of an oncoming electrical fire as opposed to forgetting to switch on the alternator and running the battery dry.

No nav? He had a friggin iPad and a sentry still working. Even so, it was severe clear.

Aviate, navigate, communicate.

Looking at the airport diagram, landing RWY32 most aircraft would be turning left where the FBO, tiedowns, hangars are. So if it was a bone fide get-on-the-ground-right-now-emergency-landing close behind traffic, then why no use the right side of the runway? Worst case you put a wheel in the grass and maybe take out an edge light.

Anyway, that's my best Gryder/Lirio glad no one was seriously hurt, except for Avemco's bottom line.

Welp there to two perfectly good airplanes. Based on his angle of attack, little wing drops and the sink rate developing on final I thought for sure it was going to be one of those ‘guy keeps pulling back because he wants to go slower and leaves the power at idle’ stall/spin videos.

But in all reality, I would wager little to no enforcement will happen here.

Imagine doing everything right and you get t-boned by someone who created their own emergency out of pure panic. Extremely lucky nobody was killed.

Wonderful thing about having ADSB on the panel - you can see if someone appears too close behind you, and act accordingly.

These freaking idiots are why when I shop insurance on a GA airplane it's like "Well. Maybe when you upgrade. But probably not, because it's still a huge amount of money straight into the void".

While mine could be cheaper, it is still way less than my auto insurance. For a lot more coverage.
