Rumor: Plane Off the Runway At CLE?

I have the unenviable task of booking airline tickets for most of the management in our company when the WX is not conductive to flying our airplane... (Or we are double- booked) I have our safety manager on the ground in CLE that called and said that the reason that they were shutting the engines down was to save fuel as it was going be a while before they took off. The captain informed them that the delay was due to the fact that there is an airplane off the runway. (No info as to T/O or Lndg) They are presently in line for the de-ice pad, with the engines shut down. Rough weather today, in the midwest and down towards Florida.

Fly safe everybody

I don't know most of what this means but...........

NIL on 6L, and a dead 737 on 6R will close down an airport real quick.

Looks like the airport has been basically closed since 6pm local based on flightaware.

No mention of the 737. Sort of glad I'm off today...don't really want to drive the hour to CLE.

Breaking News into the Fox 8 Newsroom...

Officials with Cleveland Hopkins Airport have shut down the airport due to freezing rain making all runways and taxiways unusable.

According to Pat Smith, Media Relations spokesperson for Cleveland Hopkins Airport, freezing rain and high levels of precipitation are causing all runways to ice over.

All efforts to plow and snow blow the ice have been unsuccessful to stop the ice from forming.

According to Smith so far six flights have been canceled due to the conditions at the airport. Smith adds all flights for the evening have been canceled due to the closing of the airport's runways.

Smith did not provide an immediate timetable as to when the airport would reopen.

Stay with myFOXCleveland.com for the latest on this developing situation.

Due to SNOW-ICE REMOVAL, the Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) was closed as of Feb 12 at 07:30 PM EST. The date/time when the airport is expected to reopen is Feb 12 at 11:00 PM EST.

Well, the airport looks to be up and running now. First departure out of CLE flew over my house just a few minutes ago.

my friend was on that flight out of CLE, he left me a message saying the 73 slid off the runway while taxiing back to get de-ice again (after a 20min wait for runway snow removal). don't have much detail besides that.

*update* the 737-700 was taxiing on the runway back for de-ice. skidded off the taxi way while exiting, one of the main got stuck in the grass. after an hour of inspection, the plane was towed out and back to the gate. additional ops check passed and the plane is back online. crew time out and my friend is still stuck in CLE right now. no injuries were reported.

Ok, I have what may seem like a dumb question, but do the passengers remain in their seats on the aircraft during the tow out of the muck?

Reason I ask is a year or so ago, I was boarded on an AA MD-80 at DFW trying to get back to SFO. Only a handful of us had boarded (business) when suddenly the captain put a halt to boarding the rest of the aircraft, and told us to all sit down and not walk around the aircraft. He didn't give us an explanation as to why, so of course people started whispering about the possibility of a bomb being onboard and the flight attendants came around handing out lots of free alcohol to the few of us in business class who had boarded. Well, it turned out that the struts on the nose gear were broken, but we were not allowed to de-plane or move around. We sat there for 3 hours why they fixed the struts on the nose gear. That was one flight where I wish I wasn't in business class and was out in the terminal at the bar with the rest of the passengers!

So that explains my question about towing an aircraft out of the muck while passengers are onboard.

according to my friend, everybody was in their seat while the plane was being tow out of the mud. i guess due to the condition, it was safer for the pax to remain seated than deplaning them in the middle of a taxi/runway with bad wx.

Took me 2 1/2 hours to drive home from DTW last night (usually takes 45 minutes). Freezing rain in DAY was a big pain in the ass, as well.

Well, PIT was no walk in the park today either.... :(

Ah, so you were part of all that fun yesterday, too? :panic: We were actually running early on our first 3 legs yesterday UNTIL we hit PIT. That's when our fun and games started. One charming pax was quite annoyed he wasn't being updated by the CA every minute and a half as to "what was going on." Being updated when the CA actually knew something new apparently wasn't good enough for him, I guess. :whatever:

Our pax were actually pretty cool about it. We JUST got into PIT before they closed 10R, arriving about 20 mins late. We quick turned and headed for de-ice, but they kept changing the observed precipitation type (drizzle, freezing drizzle, snow, ice pellets, snow pellets, etc) to combinations that we couldn't take off with. Finally they called it just plain ol' "snow", and we were on our way.

How you people live up there in that snow all the time is beyond me... I've been a southern boy too long for that stuff!!!! :)
