Reno race crash in front of grandstands

Frome here: Update: Three confirmed dead in Reno Air Races crash; first crash to involve spectators | Reno Gazette-Journal | rgj.com

Looks like the abrupt G force blew the tailwheel down...

Another stupid question: do those planes carry ejection seats?

No, there is no point 75ft AGL. The Jet class has some aircraft that were originally equipped with ejection seats. I am willing to bet most or all have removed them for weight savings, and because most of those chutes need 2-300 feet to fully expand.

RIP to the victims. I, for one, will be glad to see Reno shut down. The reason is that air racing butchers historic aircraft as they are converted into racers and grenades rare engines as they are pushed well beyond their design limits.

Can't wait till the likes of you get a hold of NASCAR... people die there too.... Soo many people have died in car wrecks on the interstate highway system.. Perhaps we should shut that down too??? I've seen many chopped and "Modified" cars blow by me at amazing speed on I 65.... Let's BAN airshows too... Certain political parties like to BAN things.....

Come to think of it...

Let's GROUND ALL AIRPLANES! Can't you see what COULD happen?

Get it?

Unfortunately, Our Government is busy pulling any and all pics and videos as we speak..

Free speech..

Sure.

In case anyone wonders, I've been in Box 61 a couple of times. This is a truly horrible event... Don't condemn the aircraft for an absolute tragedy. Bad things happen everywhere. Imagine if you were on an interstate bridge over the Mississippi in Minneapolis when........ What was BANNED in response???? Huh? NOTHING.

A fan was killed in INDIANAPOLIS during the 500 when a tire was thrown into the seats. Was the race BANNED??? NO.

Let's put our knees back, Please.

Just talked to a buddy of mine from the hospital who was about 50 feet away from the impact. Has a big wound from shrapnel on his back but otherwise ok. Feels very lucky to be alive.

Guys, I don't normally speak up at times like this but in a part of the forum that can be read by the general public, it seems disrespectful to argue about whether or not air racing should be banned. It behooves us professionals in our field to honor the fallen and save our opinions for more discretionary parts of the website to discuss our thought on those matters. RIP to all of those who were killed. A sad day in aviation without a doubt.

Totally different venue, for one, its much more populated. Reno has been under the gun for a while, year after year, there have been fatalities, or multiple fatalities. The FAA has had a microscope on Reno for years. One person getting killed at the Indy 500 will raise concerns, but will diminish after you look at how much money is generated, and how many people watch the race etc. Reno couldn't hold a candle to it. Plus Indy hasn't had the scorched track record of killing racers like Reno has.

Let's put our knees back, Please.

Glad your buddy is okay. I believe I've heard from everyone now. I didn't have a clear picture of everyone who was going this year like in years past.

There's a "smoking gun" photo out there now showing the trim tab in the process of departing. What a nightmare.

I've met many of the racers, and have seen one meet an unfortunate end.... All the racers know the deal.

Until you've heard the entire crowd suck up a breath at once, then fall silent, poeple have no idea how bad this was.

The wreck I saw happened just after the start finish line, and was going away from us.

I was one who sucked my breath in, as I saw the Glasair roll inverted, followed by a *whump* , dust, and silence. Then a siren, as all other a/c climbed nearly vertical while the crash trucks rolled.

Talk of eliminating the races is premature, for reasons I have already stated.

Poeple lost thier lives, and it's time for some respect, first. That's why I get fired up at those who jump out and say BAN this or that...

Thank God so many lived.

Ever thought it was due to respect for the friends and families involved?

Of course. I'm speaking of the aircraft and it's components, not the gore factor. I've seen enough of that in my time.

Editing vs. removal is my preference.

One of the videos removed was from a distance, showing the a/c only, but it was removed, as well. No reason to.

Airline crashes, well.. cue the 11 o'clock news... No respect there.

I wish your post was the case, but I feel there is more to the ban the video story.

I have watched probably 5 videos of todays accident, and about 50 photos. Its pretty bad from every angle. Mostly because I knew Jimmy. Its a hard day and age to see these graphic videos instantly uploaded.

Ugh. That's awful. I only know for sure of one friend of mine that was planning on going and he had not arrived in Reno yet when the crash happened.

I can't imagine. I've seen three videos and one still, no more.

I didn't know Jimmy, so I can't know how you feel, other than box 61 where I once sat didn't look so good.

I saw the glasair that crashed when I was there, in the pits and his crew.

I offer my condolences... This is a truly terrible thing.

I don't think you got the point of his post... it isn't that Reno should be shut down because it is dangerous, but rather that they are racing with historic aircraft/engines and we are running out of these resources. Some people don't like to see historic one-of-a-kind aircraft getting highly modified/destroyed in the name of sports. Burt Rutan speaks on this passionately in one of the videos about his pond racer. I think he was headed down the right road in air racing but was halted by his own tragic accident.

It is sad isn't it. FUBAR.

Just how is that disrespectful? It is honoring the dead to pretend this isn't going to have an impact on the future of Reno?

Wow. It can be dangerous business, that. Unfortunate when we get these terrible reminders. Speedy recovery to all those injured, and condolences to the families of the departed. Hopefully we can learn something actionable from the investigation.

Read about Bob Odom in (I believe 1949) at the Cleveland Air Races. The Cleveland Air Races were the big thing, and races had occured there since the 20's. Bill Odom, flying a highly modified Mustang, lost control and crashed into a house, killing the occupants. That was the end of the races in Cleveland. They moved to Mojave then, and eventually to Reno.

Reading the news updates I get angry. It's a risk though, for me airplanes go from point A to B. Or protect our skies flown by the people trained the best in the world. 80 yrs old and still racing I'm very surprised. I'm not an audrenaline junkie though like most pilots I know so I usually come up against opposition when I say my piece on aerobatics and taking high risks you're unsure of. This though I feel is medically tied. RIP.

I don't even know what to say to this... Just that you wouldn't get it.

Pretty clear in this photo that part of the elevator trim tab is missing. That would cause a rapid, high-G pitch up.

Some of our guys on the ground over there concur with the trim tab flutter. It's a shame, we were just talking about Jimmy's Mustang fly in...
