Reno race crash in front of grandstands

This will change the way the race is run forever.

Where was this aircraft based? We have several P-51's on our airport but this isn't one of them.

I thought it was based at Leeward's Florida air ranch near Ocala.

So...everyone else is flying level, in a turn...and in the video it appears this guy is pretty much 85* nose down? What the hell?

Anyone care to be a bit more descriptive as to why he was in that attitude and in that location?

Ive never followed much of the reno air races, thanks.

Word from elsewhere was some significant fluttering of the airframe before it ended up pitching upward...

sigh...

RIP to those lost. I met Jimmy not too long ago and ended up selling him some sectionals on his way to Oshkosh in Old Crow. Very nice gentleman and an incredible pilot.

Plane crashing at Reno air race sept. 16 2011 - YouTube

ETA: Nevermind.. Shoulda read all the thread..

Much better video - skip to around 33 seconds and watch.. He pitches up, rolls inverted and into the dirt..

RIP Jimmy..

It was Leeward?!?!

Double Damn. I know his grandson

I knew Jimmy, several pilots and several members of different teams ground crew. It is the worst accident I have ever heard in the US. Galloping Ghost was hangared in the same hangar as a Turbo Commander we fly.

Initial feelings from a member of the crew, is that the boil off system the airplane uses exploded.... Of course we won't know, there is no airplane to examine.

Wow, I'm not sure what to say to this one. It's so far from what anyone would expect, that there really are no words. I just hope this isn't the end of the races.

The show has been canceled this year. The FAA has been guns loaded ready to pull the trigger on the end of Reno for several years. This was the last nail in the coffin IMO.

RIP to the victims. I, for one, will be glad to see Reno shut down. The reason is that air racing butchers historic aircraft as they are converted into racers and grenades rare engines as they are pushed well beyond their design limits.

There were a bunch of them in attendance apparently.

Wow. I don't know why this surprises me, but it does just the same. My thoughts are out to any of you here that know any of those injured, or worse.

The comments on the YouTube video are beyond belief. I know that I am officially old now. Maybe there really is something to this whole desensitvity thing?
