so...i have been living in NJ for almost 20 years. Practically grew up here. In my late 20's, wife and a small kid. It's starting to get toooo expensive here as the taxes are never ending here.
Any advice for relocating and potentially starting a new life in a different state. Preferably in the southeast.
Majority of my family members live on east coast

Are you looking for advice on potential states/cities, or how to physically conduct the move?

What sort of things are important to you? Big town or small town? Rural or urban? Mountains, flatlands, water? Cost of living? Favorable taxes? Quality of schools?

Florida- no state income tax and decent weather all year. We moved from the Midwest and really like it.

Full time truck driver at the moment and pt cfi on weekends
But I don't enjoy cfi. Maybe banner towing or SIC in a entry level position is in the near future
Hopefully this will lead to a FT flying job. The tri-state here has plenty of bases to choose from as far as regionals go.

Potential States/cities ---prefer something in medium to small size town In the suburbs
Schools are important as well taxes and low crime area.
NC/SC/FL is the targeted area

Random question, but did you ever work for TLG/Van Wagner? I see your Avatar is a cockpit photo from an A-60 Airship. Seeing as you're from New Jersey, I'd be willing to guess it was the Horizon/Blue Cross/Blue Shield Airship.

Florida is the only state out of those you mentioned with no state income tax. Cost of living is much cheaper than where you are but southeast FL is getting expensive these days (Miami/Ft. Lauderdale). You can't go wrong with Orlando, Tampa or Jax if you can find work. The winters are amazing here, mostly 70 degrees and sunny.

I lived in Deland FL for a while
Loved it. Close enough to the ocean, cool breeze in the summer, being a college town you have all the shopping and dining options. CFI jobs were there, banner towing - there's a couple of places in DAB/New Smyrna, can't comment on the QoL there though, haven't tried.
Work - can't complain personally, got hired into a 'Van with 550 hrs and then into a jet with <100 hrs Van time and 9.5hrs multi, but the area is also rather well saturated with pilots, ERAU, EPIC, ATP etc all being right there, so your mileage might vary.
The town was great though. Miss it every day

I know a guy that I think could get you in banner towing in Delaware. You'd have to choose carefully to find good schools and affordable neighborhoods.
We live in Northern VA and love it. You have to go North and West to find something affordable. But if you're going to vote for people that increase taxes and regulations, then stay in Jersey. We have enough problems with people from Marlyland moving here and doing that. ;)

Where in Jersey are you?

Central jersey

what part if you don't mind sharing?

never worked for them but few years ago they were in town got a nice tour of the ship. They said there are fewer airship pilots than astronauts

Wow, a new low....moving advice that is not based on career goals, experience, or a job search....:bang:

Just keep in mind, corporate aviation in Jax is a crap show. Decent city, but aviation wise, I'd avoid it if possible. Your career will thank you later.

When I moved to Deland it was due to a company there offering to share the facilities, workforce etc for the start-up I was woring on at the time.
When I showed up there with a 24 foot truck with all of our crap in it and a plane kit on top and saw that in the three month since our agreement nothing was done.. and then when I found out that they were planning to have me pay 80% of their hangar rent while claiming it was a fair half.. :)
I set up on the other end of the field, camped out in the hangar while looking for a rental place to live in, and ended up having a huge blast in that town for the next six years. My favorite town so far of all the countries I lived in - and I ended up there rather randomly. Life works in mysterious ways.

Florida would be great if wasn't full of Floridians. I really liked Charlotte and Wilmington, NC. Lots of Jersey expats in Wilmington and probably plenty of banner-tow work there due to it being the beach.

This is the truth. FL is one state I'd never more back to, and I dread visiting. Filled with people waiting to die, and willing to help you die inside.
