Reasonable price for plane ticket?

I have been searching online for a cheap plane ticket to Kunming,China from RDU. The cheapest ticket I can find is $1,239.

For those of you on here who have done quite a bit of traveling, do you think that price is reasonable?

Also, if I select that ticket, I will be flying on Continential Airlines from RDU to EWR and then EWR to Beijing. Once in Beijing I will fly on China Southern Airlines to Kunming.

Lemme get this straight: you want to fly from one side of the planet to another, and you're worried about whether $1200 is reasonable?

:(

That a very low price. Suspiciously low actually. Is one of those legs on a Chinese-built airliner or something?

That's very reasonable if it's round trip. If it's one way then it's still okay.

China Southern is a relatively good airline. I'd fly them over Air China for sure.

What are you doing in Kunming?

I'd bet the RDU-EWR flight is on us. We do most if not all the RDU flights to EWR. IIRC from my time in Okinawa, China Southern was a decent airline and reasonably priced.

Now that's mature

Among other things there is a fairly big sim training facility that used to be owned by Alteon. It's a major jumping off spot for travel in the Yunnan province. It was the HQ for the Flying Tigers in WWII and the major landing port for the "hump" flying from India.

I found an even cheaper ticket for $736 (one-way): RDU to SEA on American. SEA to PEK on Hainan Airlines. PEK to KMG on Hainan.

Does anyone on here know anything about Hainan Airlines in terms of quality of service, safety record, etc?

BTW: Many of you are wondering why I am going to China. I am going there to study Chinese at Yunnan Normal University in Kunming.
