Reasonable price for plane ticket?

Join the Navy. They'll teach you Mandarin for free.

At which point you will spend the best 1.5 years of your life in Monterey, CA followed by your worst 4 in Oahu, Hawaii.

That is according to my friend who is currently living 100 yds from the ocean on Oahu.

Try Kayak.com and it will search a lot of flights. I don't know much about Hainan but I remember there being a lot of labor trouble there.

Not sure when you are going but I found a one way in mid June thats AA to JFK, Cathay to HKG and then Dragonair to Kunming for $1151.

I found an even cheaper ticket for $736 (one-way): RDU to SEA on American. SEA to PEK on Hainan Airlines. PEK to KMG on Hainan.

Does anyone on here know anything about Hainan Airlines in terms of quality of service, safety record, etc?

BTW: Many of you are wondering why I am going to China. I am going there to study Chinese at Yunnan Normal University in Kunming.

Hainan is good. They are partially foreign owned. I rode them from Sanya to Nanjing late last year. Most likely be a 737NG.

Good luck with the Mandarin study.

When I saw STL-DTW-PEK on NW a few years back for $989, I thought someone in reservations left out a number. You ain't gonna find a much better deal than the one you found, trust me.

Not meant as a personal attack, but I find this attitude very frustrating. Its what killed service on domestic airlines. Last thing we need is "You can unplug the TVs and I'll bring my own food along on the 15 hour flight to Sydney if you'll take another $100 off my ticket".

Let's see.....

pay about $1000 to fly a few THOUSAND miles comes to pennies/mile.

And we wonder why the airline industry has consistantly lost money.

BRILLIANT!

I have found all the major airlines in China to be safe and reliable including Hainan and China Southern. Hainan is the smaller of those choices. China Southern is the largest in China.
For the cheapest flights inside China try www.ctrip.com. You might also try Hong Kong based www.zuji.com.
$1200 for roundtrip to China sounds about right. I just did a roundtrip to India (Chennai) from Orlando for $1400 thru Continental/Lufthansa.

Determine what level of service and routing you are willing to accept to get to China. Kayak or Orbitz your preferences to determine the price. If you are willing to pay the money to buy the tickets it's reasonable. If you don't have the money or are unwilling to pay what they are asking for the ticket, it's not. As some have said here, if you buy the cheapest ticket in town don't complain about your seat, the routing, the food (or lack of it) and the rest of the things that typically accompany the cheapest fares. You should be able to shop around and get a decent fare with a carrier that provides at least reasonably good options for you. Don't be overly fast to zero in on CHEAPEST...

Good luck in your Chinese Studies.

People shouldn't be quick to jump on this guy. Why pay more when you can get by on cheap? On principle? It will take a lot more than a few pilots paying a little more on tickets in order to bring prices back up where they ought to be.

Nobody WANTS to pay full retail price for anything. Everyone wants a deal, airline tickets are certainly no different.

I completely agree. If theres a cheaper fare to be had, then by all means find it!

The service is getting from one place to another, if you dont care about the quality of service or the routing, then why not find the lowest price?
