Really?? AOPA *NEEDS* a brand new Caravan?

I don't know why people, especially the ones that aren't even members, care if AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) buys an economical people mover that they require for business.
Some of us stopped being members when we really sat down and thought about how our membership dues are being spent. While not a current member, the perception the public gets from AOPA has an effect on all of us.

Plus, if youre a member all you have to do is call AOPA and tell them to quit sending you letters and calling and it will magically stop.
No. No it doesn't. Especially if you're a member, then your membership lapses and you're now a former member.

Somehow they found me at my new address and phone number, too. That's an awful lot of time and effort (not to mention postage) to track down someone that has told them he isn't interested in re-joining. I'd think their efforts could be better spent elsewhere.

AOPA's product is protecting GA which I'm willing to drop 30 dollar's a year on.
Fair enough. You're more than welcome to support organizations any way you desire (legally, of course). In my opinion, they aren't protecting my interests and I can't support them financially. I'll also continue to be vocal about how they're spending the money they "make".

Because I have the ability to discuss AOPA (even negatively), I have the responsibility to do so. This isn't a case of "if you can't say anything nice...".

NBAA sure did come up with a nice response to the USA Today article last week...

...what did AOPA have to say about it?

Opposing view: Small airports benefit all

General aviation serves the public good and relieves congestion.

By Craig L. Fuller Surveys tell us people view general aviation as an important part of our national transportation system. But, we also know GA is not well understood. It comprises all flying except scheduled airlines and the military. That means law enforcement, firefighting, air ambulance, search-and-rescue, traffic reporting, package delivery and more fit under the "general aviation" banner. In short, GA provides services that millions of Americans and thousands of American businesses rely on every day.
<more> Just as highways crisscross the nation, serving small towns and big cities, so the nation's more than 5,000 public-use airports link communities of all sizes. Commercial air carriers serve fewer than 150 of those airports. That's like having a highway system that connects only the country's 150 largest cities.
</more>
Just as every driver pays taxes that fund road maintenance and development, so every person who flies pays taxes to maintain the airport and air traffic control system. You might never drive to the tens of thousands of small communities served by our national highway system, and you might never visit thousands of small airports that make up our aviation system. But because those roads, and airports, serve the public good, we all pay a share for their maintenance.
Many public-use airports, large and small, are eligible to receive federal funding for infrastructure maintenance and improvement. In fiscal 2007, GA airports that received federal grants got an average of $750,000 each. That same year, commercial air carrier airports that received funding got an average of $5.5 million each — more than seven times the amount awarded to smaller fields.
Small airports create jobs and development opportunities, attract businesses and allow them to grow. In fact, GA is responsible for creating some 1.2 million jobs and contributing $150 billion annually to America's economy.
And general aviation airports relieve congestion and reduce delays at the big airline airports. Without them, thousands more flights would crowd into already overburdened airports, slowing traffic, increasing delays and adding to security lines.
A robust general aviation system is a valuable national asset and vital transportation link serving millions of Americans every day. Let's keep it that way.
Craig L. Fuller is president and CEO of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

I stopped renewing my membership solely due to all the 3x's a week junk mail I received from them.

I've gotten a half dozen solicitations to add various subscriptions to my cable service since I moved in two months ago.

Guess I should cancel my cable service.

I understand what you're saying. But AOPA wants you to renew online to "save paper" and then they kill a tree for each person a year with the amount of junk mail they send. I've never had any company bug me as much as AOPA. It seems counter productive.

It's like "Money mean for I-40 diverted to State Route 51!"

Umm... oh, nevermind.

That would be your choice. I don't really care, but don't expect me to go rant and rave about how great Time Warner is.

I don't mind one bit that AOPA spent some of my dues on a new Cessna and supported GA. How many corporate pilots get mad that the bank they fly for spent investors' money on the equipment they fly? What do you think AOPA does with those airplanes which, by the way, HAVE EVERY THING TO DO with the business they're in! If that convinces you, you can always not renew because the lobbying club LOBBIED for your continued membership. It's like they whizzed in your corn flakes or something...

I'd be more upset if they were spending the money to constantly fly on a 121 carrier. At least they practice what they preach.

I totally agree with KSCessnaDriver. This is an organization that was founded on supporting GA. If they weren't buying GA aircraft, and flying GA aircraft, then what kind of message are they sending?? I totally support their decision to buy and operate these aircraft. Its not pissing anything away. Its not them just talking about supporting GA...its them showing their support for GA by participating. Anything less would be hypocritical.

If you dont support organizations that are making a stand for GA freedoms that we are privileged with in our country, then dont bitch when those freedoms start to disappear. Is the organization perfect? No. But who is doing a better job than the AOPA?

I will gladly keep my membership and support the AOPA.

I stopped renewing my membership solely due to all the 3x's a week junk mail I received from them.

Me too. It is ridiculous.

My email to them:

To whom it may concern,

I will not be renewing my AOPA membership. The reason I am not renewing my membership? Just one: Junk Mail. I simply cannot believe my dues even pay for the unbelievable amounts of mail you send me asking me to renew, even when I was a member already.

Perhaps some day, when you STOP wasting so much money on spamming your own members, I will consider becoming a member of what once was a great organization.

Maybe it's because you guys have advanced ratings but I don't receive that much junk mail from them. Certainly not 3 times a week like some of you claim. i get the Flight Training and AOPA Pilot mags once a month, the occasional begging for money flyer and solicitations for life insurance or an AOPA Credit card.

I really need to contact Sporty's and ask them to stop sending me catalogs. They go straight to the recycling bin.
