Reality Check

Gotcha....

Well the offer still stands anyway!!

We've definitly toured several Delta Pilots and many other Airlines. Think we have 3 students enrolling this week that have parents that are pilots at Delta.

When I visited back in Aug 99 they were showing a video of Comair still flying the Saabs and Jim Williams (owner of ATA) as being on the board of directors. My wife and infant child were standing outside the sim room when a lady walked by with a foreign student and made the comment loud enough that she couldnt believe someone would bring a baby on the tour. Well for us if was a family move and her attitude sucked and the guy inside was talking about how big the family was and close knit group. Her attitude helped me make the decision not to attend there. Plus the guy I sat down with couldnt tell me abou the jet direct program. He stalled and kept on saying instructing was the only way and then finally admitted he didnt have a clue about the program. I hope its better now because that was a big turn off.

Well 99 was quite a bit ago, I wansn't here at the time. From what I know of that era, things are quite a bit different and better!

I really hope so. It looked real bad because I had just left ATA that morning before coming there and to see Jim there and the Saabs were uncool..

Do you if there are any plans for Delta to give current employees any deals down there?

5%? I guess thats better than nothing but since most of the Delta employees are not in FL and are in GA I guess that discount is pretty safe. Sounds like the company we will give this to you because we know you cant use it

On the subject of children of pilots touring...

A couple months ago I ran a FRASCA sim for one of the tour groups, all the prospective students had taken a turn and there was some time left so I asked if any of the significant others/parents wanted to try it. One father jumps in to take a turn. Here I am trying to explain the real basics like rotate at 55 and that means just a slight pull back on the yoke and how the altimeter will show how high he is, just real simple instructions.... he's real nice and says OK and then flys the sim perfectly! I'm like, uh, you have flown before eh? Turns out he's a one of the trainers for Northwest. I should have jumped into the sim and had him show me a thing or two. Anyway, a real cool guy and at least I didn't come across like an idiot... he did say he was impressed with the school for the most part.

After reading that story, it just isn't as interesting as I thought. Oh well, I already wrote it, so I might as well post it.

FWIW, Last weekend my wife and I decided to non-rev up to D.C. to do a couple of days of site seeing. On our return trip we went through CVG. I ran into probably 15 Comair pilot's who had all attended the Acadamy, either CAA or as DCA. I have had doubts as to whether I wasnted to finish up at DCA or not. They all said that the program works and will get you in the right seat at Comair. I asked them how many people do you run into on a daily basis that were grads of CAA and DCA. They told me that they run into or fly with grads multiple times on a daily basis. That trip bolstered me to stick with it. It's a proven program and it works. Just my $0.02.

Well we actually have quite a few students here that are using the discount. Many have left to come train here full time, while others continue to work and come here on their off time to train.

I thought DCA only had students who trained full time. That is what I was told way back when. I know now the company isnt granting any leave for anything but maternity and FMLA. To bad they havent made it more accessible to the many employees in ATL because I am sure they would be booked constantly.

The Academy has the new Flex program. I'm currently in the flex program. I started off going full time, and luckily they came up with the new program, so I could switch over. I work over in the DCA maintenance hangar and on my time off I fly of do ground school. I know there is another flex student who is a Delta flight attendant, who flys on her days off between trips. The program is still part 141, and get the same opportunities as the full time students, but you pick your schedule, not he school

Things have definitly changed since you toured Tim. We have a regular full time 141 academy training and also a part time "Flex Scheduling" program that allows for people to work a job and still attend the 141 program. We also have a part 61 training more typical of an FBO route, but it more geared to someone wanting a license more for pleasure.

Hi , I'm new here and I have one thing to share... and that should tell a lot about the Academy!

ALL MY INSTRUCTORS ARE NOW EITHER FLYING IN THE RIGHT SEAT OF A CRJ OR ERJ OR ARE IN TRAINING FOR IT!

I don't care what people say, those that did not have the patience or the commitment to finish the program are the ones complaining in this forum. If you are a new student thinking about training, you should seriously consider DCA...

Good luck!

I guess DCA had to adjust so that they didnt lose guy and gals to local FBO's. The Flex deal sounds really good but is it still done as a big package like the full time students are is the pricing different
