Real V1 Cuts

Maybe the ANA light blue and dark blue stripe???

"Blue on blue" is usually a term for events such as friendly fire or threats within group created by that group. Not taking fire from bad guys.

I would hate to really lose one in a loaded YS-11. I just shuddered typing that.
It was a handful but like everything else, the secret was RUDDER and trim, trim, trim. I knock the airplane but it carried 46 pax out of Bluefield and a few other lousy West Virginia airports. One of our old Capts lost one coming out of CRW, nursed it around the hills and on roll-out the other one crapped out.

I will have to tell you the tales (I don't know if they are true or not) about how Nihon wound up demonstrating them to Piedmont and some of the things they did.

My guess is that the blue on blue term is related to both pilots being senior/experienced. The flip side involves many airlines having policies that prohibit green on green crews.

I've never actually heard the term before though.

In that sense, yes. It's a NATO term due to NATO being "Blue Force" and Soviet counties being "Orange Force". I guess "red" was too cliche.

Up until a few months ago, we were allowed to pull back one engine on the C-5 as long as we were at least 500' AGL. The FTU still does it, but for the rest of us, it's no longer a routine training maneuver in the jet. The powers that be decided that when it's performed in a 'simulated' manner in the jet, it's not as 'realistic' as doing it in the sim. When an engine is pulled back to idle, the N1 runs about 20% and the N2 still runs about 60%, so you're still getting some thrust out of the engine. Plus we represent a huge portion of the government's fuel bill, so they're trying to move more and more of our training over to the sim. Funny that we still have to fly the same 'flying hour program'; except now we're just boring holes in the sky for 4 hours a pop rather than getting any substantive training done.

you know who ELSE wore a white glove...

Just foolin' with ya....

I have heard some of the flight safety guys talk about doing them in the Brasilia for real. This is back in the 80s when the plane was new and so was the training. Now, anyone who's flown the Brasilia knows it needs a real leg full of rudder to keep it going straight.

Pretty hardcore stories... the same guy had a double autofeather just after takeoff and made it back to the airport with a 180. According to him, Embraer looked at it afterward and figured it was about a one in a bazillion chance of it happening.

Screw Sully...this guy made it to an airport! I want him up front!

Yeah seriously! Talking to him was surreal. I mean I guess 20yrs later you're not gonna tell it like it happened yesterday but DAMN was he calm and cool about it. He said he flipped the autofx switch off the moment it happened, and just after touchdown the props started unfeathering. Now again, could have been 20yrs of storytelling but it certainly was a nice touch!

A story like that is all about the altitude. You know. His report to the chief pilot stated that they both autofeathered around 5k.

After a few beers it was "climbing through 2500".

20 years later "the wheels no sooner hit the wells when...but I was able to turn it around and get 'er back down. Delivered a baby from a pregnant lady that went into labor from the whole ordeal. Then I went down to the soup kitchen and fed the homeless. That's how we rolled back then, son.":yup:

Yeah, I mean give a guy 20yrs and forgetting to take the props out of feather before taxi turns into a double autofeather just after takeoff! Still, this guy seemed legit. I wonder if there's an NTSB on it... could have happened in Brazil, though

That made me chuckle. :rotfl:

Well played, sir.
