Ramp Check

Ok so I have a scenario...


You fly boxes and are given the total weight but not the individual weights. Every knows you are not gonna sit there and weigh each individual box...how do you explain this to the FAA, or is this accepted???

Depends on the operation and what the FAA has been approved. I have to weight each package because no one tells me the total weight. It's in my Ops Specs that I have to do that. Other operations work differently....[que the masses]

On one side of my route everything is weighed as the airplane is loaded. That's easy. On the other side, they come with a total weight and nothing else. Fortunately, all of my boxes have individual weights on them so I use a calculator to get individual zone weights. It's not overly difficult or time consuming unless they come with 2000-3500 pounds of freight.

Honestly though, I've been ramped a few times flying freight and have yet to have the FAA get their scale out and weigh everything. Not to say that it can't or won't happen or that I don't try to be accurate with my zone weights, but I don't know too many Fed's that want to stand outside and weigh 3000 pounds of freight, or 300 for that matter.

It's that whole promotion of commerce part of the deal. They don't want to catch flak for holding you up and being late. So they are really limited in what they can do. Mostly its just certificate, documents, mainenance log, and ops manual.

If the customers' out there loading the aircraft, it would be tough for me to do much else anyways. The company requires me to monitor and assist in loading. I usually have just enough time to get the clearance, set up the radios, and get the performance numbers before it's time to blast off.

So if I did get off late, the company call the FAA wanting to know why they held me up and cost them money.

You flying a UPS route? That sounds like my life in a nutshell.
