Questions about Utah Valley State College

Now.. can you 'attend' UVSC Global and do the flight portion at any flight school, or select schools that are associated with UVSC (I am guessing this is closer to the truth) .

If I apply to UVSC, and am accepted, could I say request 30k from the 'alternative' loans and use it anywhere?

As far as I know, it has to be a flight school associated with UVSC to get the Student Loans. I may be wrong though.

If the flight school you want to use isn't currently associated with UVSC, they can call UVSC and get approved. It seems like a simple process, but I think it costs the school some money though.

Of course you could use any school, just find you own financing.

"It is more like a cult of micromanagement, you cant do anything without the permission of bunch of different people that are "in charge".

-- Sounds like another fine institution in Utah... guess some people just feel the need to have a higher authority...
Is UVSC flight program part 141? How much do the new diamond twinstars rent for?
I think they lost their 141 status. I think they are for $150 an hour, but you will take a long time to get into one.

I have my own questions...

I already have an A.S. Liberal Arts degree (not too useful), but am thinking of getting a four year at UVSC online. I think I already have most of the 'general' degree requirements, so I think I only need the flight stuff.

I am primarily interested in this because I think it will be A.) The best and most affordable way get financing for my flying and B.) the fastest way to finish up my damned four year degree.

Any suggestions? Is it relatively easy to set up enrollment and everything at UVSC Global Aviation? I think financial aid (like Pell) will cover the actual costs of the school stuff. How realistic is it to fly or instruct fulltime and work on the aviation classes online (how long does it take).

Will they accept my damn credits? Of course, if not, I'm not going to waste my time.

Yes, yes, and yes!

The online is totally the way to go. So long as the flight school you are attending is on the approved global aviation list you can recieve federal financial aid (Pell and Stafford) to help pay for your training. Hell its pretty much all I have done.

As to credit transfer I believe it is much easier if you already have a degree to not lose any credits in transfer. I have never had to do that though so I am not 100% sure.

Yes, except that like I said the school you attend has to be o the list. To be on the list the school has to list the costs of their program, so you will be limited to the maximum cost that were given to UVSC financial aid office. Generally this is adequate. You very may well be able to get $30,000 if it is within the cost structure that the school has listed, but not one cent more than what they put on the paperwork.

Another question.

Do I have to follow the pace of the program as far as flight training?

Could I knock out my aviation credits in six months?

If you register for the class then you must finish by the end of the semester, or take an incomplete. Then you have one year from the incomplete to finish.

If you already have the rating or certificate then it is just a matter of completing the quizzes, tests, and submitting a copy of your certificate.

The problem is that Pell/Stafford loans don't give you nearly enough money to do anything more than one or two per semester, so to do it quickly requires extra money, usually in the form of a unsubsidized student loan.

Overall how is the Flight School at UVSC ?
I like to think of UVSC as 60 flight schools under one roof. Some of the instructors are really good, some are really bad. That and the way it is managed it will take forever and a day to get your ratings done.

I had two exceptionally good instructors, but I get students all the time that quit UVSC and tell some horror stories.

One of them just came over after two years with UVSC and with 195 hours total, he has 180 hours of dual received, and no instrument rating. Basically the five instructors he had there just milked him for time, he didn't know any better.

He was floored when I told him that through all of my ratings I only have about 85 hours of instruction received.

Thinking of applying there
If your processing fee clears, you are already accepted.

You serious? Why is it easy to get in?
Because there are no entrance requirements other than paying for it

So if I go to UVSC its like gambling what instructor I get
Precisely, like I said I had two exceptionally good instructors, both of which left UVSC in a hurry. When I was done with my private I was told that I could not keep the same instructor for instrument, even though I had a really good rapport with him and liked his teaching style. Didn't matter what I wanted.

Then after eight months of not being assigned an instructor I approached my second instructor to see if he was willing to take me on for the IR. He was willing and we flew together. The day before my checkride the "Chief Flight Instructor" called me demanding to know who my instructor was, and nearly fired him for taking me on as a student without me being assigned to him. My instrument checkride was the last time I flew at UVSC. I spent a total of a year and a half there to get PPL and IR.

That was in February of this year, By May I had CSEL, CFI (then CFII in July) at another school, and a job the day after I passed CFI. I would have the Multi done already, but I have had too many students to get my own stuff done. That should be done within the next few weeks.

I am not saying "Don't go to UVSC", I have seen some exceptionally good instructors and Pilots over there, but then again I have seen some exceptionally bad ones too. It really is luck of the draw.

Are you in Utah now? I could set you up an intro flight, weigh your options out.

No, I am located in NY/NJ area. I am a senior and looking for a good 4 year college that inexpensive and that it will get me to commercial airlines, so I put UVSC into consideration.

Just do the online degree and fly wherever you want, that way is a lot easier.

what is the online degree?
Exactly the same as the regular degree, you just never set foot in a classroom for it. I will graduate next semester with a Bachelors in Aviation Science and I have not gone to class for any of it except the general ed classes that I took on campus (read that as a social life).

Go to any accredited college for the generals and meeting chicks and such, do the core classes online. If you qualify for financial aid you can get just as much for the online classes. The only requirement is that the flight school you are attending is on the UVSC approved global aviation list (which is little more than filling out some forms).

It definitely requires some self motivation and discipline, but if you can sit yourself down and do the work you will spend a lot less time on the classes and have more time for other stuff.

whats the website?

I talked to them today and hey said the most they can give you is 16 credits unless you have your ATP or a type rating.

Please tell me it's not Larry M.
