Hey everyone,

I just joined Jet Careers. My goal is flying for the airlines or charter, or some sort of flying as is most here. I have my ASEL PPL w/complex endorsment and working on my Instrument. I have been thinking about how I want to get to the airlines. My goal is eventually Frontier. I have been thinking of not going the CFI way as I dont really care to get 700 hours to fly jets to start with. Turboprops would be fine with me. As of right now I have around 90 hours as you can see I have a long time to go. My plan I think is just to get my 2 year for right now with my Multi Commercial rating and apply with somewhere around 350TT and 40 or so ME. I really was thinking about Peidmont or Great Lakes. But who knows what they will be like in a couple years. My question is, is there a problem with that? Should I get my 4 year or could I come back and finish if need be to get to Frontier or any other major. Im trying to save some money with just getting my 2 year as Im not the richest around. I know a guy at my FBO is doing this, but I dont know about his degree.

Thanks

Ryan

Get your 4 year degree is all I have to say.

Definatly get a 4 year degree. Remember tons of people will compete with you at the majors level. As for the regionals, if you go to lakes you will be in the poor house until you leave. But you will get a lot of really great flight experience.

I wouldn't skip being a CFI though, that will teach you a lot. Right now you don't have to take that route, but just a few years back you pretty much HAD to go instruct for a bit. I didn't want to be a CFI iinitally, but looking back, I'm very glad I did. And I'll tell you, I've had a few interviews with charter places and the fact that I did instruct definatly helped.

Of course, this is just my opinion. You don't have to do it right now, but this industry will change on a dime. If you want the really good jobs, do everything you can to make yourself look better than your competition.
