Question for resident Skywest Pilots

Since there seems to be more and more JCers getting on at Skywest lately, I thought I would take a shot in the dark to see if any of you are flying me on either of these days from and returning to Sacramento:

March 10 SMF-SFO 6:55am CRJ-700
March 16 SFO-SMF 6:30am EMB-120

Just out of curiosity, approximately how many pilots are based out of Sacramento and is it a popular place, ie. do you have to have a lot of seniority to get based here for Skywest?

Sac is a pretty senior base, and also relatively small. Last I heard, they weren't letting anyone new in. There's been talk of closing it for some time, so I wouldn't count on getting it. Particularly as a new hire. I know a six year captain who still can't get it.

Is it that no one wants it, or that no one on a regional salary can afford it? Gina did ok there even on 1st year pay, but I think she blew through a bunch of savings and took the quick upgrade to Brasilia CA out of FAT for not just the PIC time.

I've only known one person to go there, but it's awfully expensive on first year pay. There aren't very many lines, which means trips are probably more interesting out of a different base. Last I heard it was still a pretty senior captain base, though.

The good thing about SBP, MRY, or SBA is they have a lot of locals. Out and back in one day. It's good if you live in the area, bad if your commuting. You'll pretty much get ANY base on the brasilia within the first 3 months your here. You might sit reserve for a while if you go to a senior base, but you''ll probably get it. The jet is a whole other story! I know SAN is pretty senior in the 120, I'd love to go there since their co-domicile is Carlsbad! Thats a 35 minute commute to work for me instead of 1-2 hours depending on traffic.

I'm not flying the trip either. I'm on the list to transfer into SMF. The list keeps getting longer and I'm getting further from the top as EMB pilot transition to the RJ then bid for SMF also. I did IOE out of SMF, my Captain had been w/ SkyW for 6 years and was 2 from the bottom at SMF.

Other than being 1.5 hrs from either Tahoe or the bay area, the question you have to ask yourself about the SMF domicile is why??? why, dear God, whyyyyyy?????? Sacto is an armpit of a town IMHO, a minor step up from Fresno or Bakertucky.

Aww, Fresburg's not THAT bad man! you can always drive up from somewhere more genteel like... Visalia!

Viper,

Did you instruct at Skywalk at SAC? I did my private there. Congrats on Skywest.

Come on Aloft, Sac isn't that bad! Granted, I did choose UC Davis for its proximity to Tahoe (averaged 50+ days of skiing per year in college) but it has been a nice place to raise a family. OK, technically I live in Davis, but Sacramento isn't an armpit. Oh well, different strokes

A Capt from SMF told me that a lot of the SMF pilots live in the Northwest and commute into SMF because it's an easy commute and they don't like SLC. People that live in the bay area also prefer SMF becuase it's a shorter commute than to FAT.

Sure did. Two other instructors from Skywalk just got hired. That makes 5 in the last year that work at SkyWest now

Man, you central valley types sure is sen-si-tive! Either that or Marin and Sandy Eggo spoiled me!

Not me either. Just got transfered from Fresno to SLC starting this week. I will really miss the California flying, but the wife would kill me if I had to keep commuting while on reserve at the same time. (Not much "home" time.)

The few pilots I know in MRY were either transfered there out of training and transfered out because its just too darn expensive or have family in the area. There are some great SKYW bases in CA but the cost of living is a real killer.
