Question for Hotdog on a stick pilots

Does “Hot Dog on a Stick” even still exist? I remember one in a mall food court growing up, but haven’t seen one in years. Like 20 or more. But I appreciate the reference…

A salty Captain I flew with when this livery came out referred to it as a “flying bowling shoe”.

I remember some people referred to them as “ Herb Turds “ when they were brown, and I remember someone once calling the blue ones “ Tidy Bowl Turds “shortly after they started painting them.
I have no animosity toward them, but those are some funny nicknames.

At the local auto show, a helicopter tour company using Robinsons had an informational display along with an R44. They’ve only been in the Pittsburgh area for a year or so. I talked with one of the pilots to see if they did instruction because I’ve always been curious about getting some rotorcraft time.

$595/hr. He said they were looking to get an R22 which would cut the price in half. I know whirlybirds are expensive but I was stunned at that rate. He said that price is one of the cheapest in the region too.

Yeah, when I was in flight school some of my roomies were RTAG pilots. They said hourly rates for training to fly helicopters range from $500-600 an hour. Sometimes more depending on the area. He scoffed at us fixed wing guys balking at $180 an hr. for a DA40.

Like many folks, that $595/hr amount gave the guy in me that started with $40/hr 152’s($55 with instructor) a moment of speechlessness. No wonder learning at Uncle Sam’s Flying School is how most rotor folks do it.

I can't imagine the cost to do it the civilian way. I knew a couple civilian only helo folks years ago, but both were (non-aviator/unrelated enlisted rates/MOS) prior military who used the GI bill/VA to fund the certificates. I presume they are flying the helo equivalent of the 747 by now, whatever that is.
