Just be prepared to whittle your number of states down to two when it comes time for the geo prefs selection.

Yesterday I spoke with... someone important in Washington from the FAA. She confirmed that the next panels will meet in late April, meaning the geographic preference email will be coming in the near future.

Concerning to what someone else said about multiple emails, if you are in both PUBNAT5 and PUBNAT6, you don't necessarily get four choices. I was in PUBNATs 3 and 4; the first time I put WA and CA, the second time WA and OR. In all of my discussions with people at Aviation Careers and elsewhere, they only had me down as WA and OR. There was also no mention of people seeing my application "twice" as suggested. I would suggest just picking two areas you like and putting them down that way twice.

Also, to answer an earlier question, there is no "Throughout the Nation" option. You could put that in the comment box, however. Keep whatever you put there short and sweet -- listing a number of facilities won't help; there's no "Oh, he'd also be willing to work at ___, I'll pass this application along to them." I should know: I tried doing it and was passed over.

Want a place that you'll almost be guaranteed to get selected with? Try Fairbanks, Alaska (FAI). Their staffing is dangerously low according to a recent NATCA report, and some applicants on JC and SM have turned down Fairbanks, meaning there are still openings. Just keep in mind that you'll be staying there for a few years.

Ahh... Fairbanks. I just left Fairbanks about a year ago to move back near family in Michigan. Fairbanks is fantastic. Sure, if you hate the cold, or outdoor activities, you won't like being there. But, if you are adventurous, love outdoors, enjoy playing baseball at midnight in the summer without artificial lighting, i suggest going there. I would love to go back.

Strange as this sounds i'm considering Fairbanks, but anyone know what the pay schedule is like? I know with AK the pay's a little different i think? Also would the GeoPrefs end up in a 'spam' folder?

Head over to http://www.stuckmic.com/atc-pay-scale.html, enter FAI in the box, and hit Tab to populate the field. It will show you the locality pay as well as the pay scale for the different developmental levels. The FAA allots a particular locality pay based on your placement city. The default (if I remember right) is 13.86% on top of the base salary.

As far as your geo prefs e-mail -- it depends on your e-mail host. The format of the address could potentially be seen as spam, since it does not come from anything standard, like "airtraffic@faa.gov" or something simple. The subject of the first e-mail will be something like "FAA's Air Traffic Selection and Training Exam" and will not come from an "faa.gov" address (mine came from a coxinet.net address). Subsequent ones will come from faa.gov addresses with strange-looking prefixes like "9-AMA-AMH-..." Some spam filters may pick up these addresses, especially if you have it set to "paranoid" status.

You'll know to start looking for the e-mail when you see the message boards here start lighting up with posts about folks getting theirs. In the meantime, just sit back and wait.:bandit:

Good advice. Also, if you have an email program that supports filtering set your filters to never send anything with "ATC" "Air Traffic Control" "FAA" "AT-SAT" or "PEPC" in the message or body to your spam/deletion folders. Or from a sender ending in ".gov". Then you won't have to worry about accidentally losing something.

This is easy to do with gmail!

That site is great btw, I knew that FAI was in a strange locality cause of the location but i never saw anything anywhere else that said what it was :) Thanks for the link :). Also as for the email thing ya, thats true :P though doing the spam fliter is a great idea as well *goes to do that*

FAI does not get locality, they get COLA. Cola is tax free, unlike locality, but it doesn't count towards your retirement like locality does. Hope that helps a little bit more.
 
I know this one guy who once dated a girl in high school who ended up going to community college with a midget who gets sandwiches (with a stepstool, obviously) at the Subway down the street from a guy whose roommate used to drink with a guy who now works at the FAA.

Geo Prefs on Thursday. Believe it.
 
i heard from a guy who was in line behind him one time at subway that he goes to quiznos on tuesday thursdays....
