Bases come and go.
That said, Regionals get shuffled around pretty often.
CLT is a fortress hub so it's probably ok but...
See: Pittsburg (USAir), Memphis (NWA), DFW (Delta).
It's in the center of the country! It's got the best east/west connections! Large O/D market! and ****POOF****
Looking from the outside in, I'm curious....
Fares between DCA and CLT went up dramatically over the last couple of years - that's a ticket I had to fly easily 8-10 times a year for business.
Is the fare jump a leading or lagging indicator of what the airline is doing with staffing?
Please explain. I'm trying to convince my wife I need one.The BIGGEST mistake I've made in my aviation career was not buying an RV when I started flying.
I'd guess it has more to do with increased demand.
When bidding for base as a new hire, do you rank your selections in desired order? If you draw one of your secondary choices does the bid for your higher choice stand or do you have to bid for it again each month?
I'll be commuting from ATL. Thus, CLT would be my first choice. However, CVG also looks to be a decent commute.
You rank them in order, and your base bid preference stays that way until you change it. So you would likely see yourself assigned to choice 5 for a month, then choice 4 the next month, then choice 3, etc. Or it could move faster and you might get choice 4 and the next month get your choice 1 already depending which choices you make vs other people and your seniority.
FYI, something to consider - depending on which side of ATL you live on, Knoxville might be closer. Commuting to both bases by driving from ATL does not take much longer than trying to jumpseat when you factor in showing up to the airport early enough to catch the flight. Then your parking would be free in CLT or TYS (pass paid for by PSA) vs paying for it in ATL if you can't take the MARTA or be dropped off. The company only pays for parking in a base. And then also, would you need a rental car or crash pad car (and insurance expenses) if you commuted to your base by air?
Right now I drive back and forth from the north side of ATL, just inside the perimeter, to TYS. It takes 2:45 if I go non-stop. I still have an apartment up there but eventually I will just use the hotel repayment program or get a crash pad.

Nope, round 1 FO.I take it you're on reserve in TYS?
I'm at Riverside Drive and 285.
My inclination is that CLT would be my top choice because there are so many flights a day on DL and AA. But, I know CLT is the most senior base.
TYS is an easy drive, but there are fewer options to commute by air. I was thinking CVG because right now it looks to be just a few months to hold R1, and there are plenty o' flights from ATL.

Commuting to/from a big base and a shrinking or former base, especially off line, can be terrible.

Commuting on your own airline (or codeshare affiliate) is worth a heck of a lot. Especially if youre PSA, you fly at the same level as mainline. Commuting on someone else's airline puts you behind everyone on the list, it makes a huge difference. This difference should not be overlooked. When bidding for base as a new hire, do you rank your selections in desired order? Did that many Delta guys actually live in CVG even back then? I know Comair is still strong with commuters now.
As a newhire at airline, You are a plinko chip. Your desires are that big money spot right down there in the middle, its so easy, its right there down the middle, ill just drop it here.....
