Proudly All...... well, something

I rode up front in a DAL 320 a few weeks ago to work and the noise level seemed pretty even with the 737. Jumpseat space was nice. Windows are bigger. Other than that? Meh.

I, too, had the "meh" thoughts about the Airbus cockpit after dozens of flights in the jumpseat.

Seven years flying an Embraer, not bad. I thought it was comfy.

Then I went to an older, smaller cockpit. Nice airplane, fun to fly it, but the cockpit was no Embraer. In fact the cockpit itself wore me out as a day went on. Light hitting me through the ceiling, from the side, constantly having to block the sun. Whistling noises at various speeds. Horrendous seat. A wiggle maneuver required to get in an out of the seat. My bag? It's lifted four feet above the ground and jammed into a cabinet that's not quite wide enough, across from the lav.

300 hours in the Airbus in the past year.

I had no idea how uncomfortable I had been, in all other airplanes.

If I flew another airplane now, I don't know where I would put my feet.

The ability to just slide your feet around freely...and forget the tray table, that's nice, and so are the stirrups...but for me, the greatest thing ever is the little foot reset platform that's on about a 30 degree slant in the middle of the rudder pedals. Yeah, other planes sometimes have a similar assembly there, but there is a pole in the way. How utterly absurd in 2018, to have a pole in the way of your footrest!

As for the noise level, there are about 30 old 320s out there flying around from the 90s. The recirc fans are loud and a decibel app actually shows nearly identical volume at the gate as at FL370. 319s and 321s even moreso, night and day difference. But there's hot mic system anyway.

737?

Forget the noise!

Where would I put my feet?

Sorry Boeing, epic fail.

Some of the older 320s are fairly loud. A lot of the noise comes from the ventilation—IMO—but a lot is wind noise. Newer 320s, the 321s and the 319s are all much quieter than the 737.

To add to this. The clean modern cockpit design, you don't have to flip 60 switches, fantastic lights out design, no stupid "wiz wiz wiz" sounds every time you trim ( because in the Bus we don't trip ) room to stand up and stretch on long flights, the ECAM ( 73 doesn't have that right? ) and too much more to name. Every time I ride in the 737 jumpseat I think it looks like a 727 with glass cockpit. Don't get me wrong I would take the 73 in gusty winds anyday and the Bus has a few other quirks but it's not even close in the long run.

I had my first flight on an a380 yesterday. I cannot get over how quiet that airplane is. The 320 has never impressed me as a pax, but the 380 really did.

The 787 is incredibly quiet too, it's definitely been a big design point. It's very noticeable when compared to the aging 777s. The A380 is my favourite airplane to fly on, and so much so that I'm willing to fly on an extra leg to connect.

Older 320's, the ones with the goofy trim wheels can be loud. 319's, the newer 320s and the 321's are whisper quiet.

I've been flying 319's most of the week and I flew an old 230 on a turn today and thank goodness for DC's.

I flew the 737, the 737 is earsplitting in comparison.

Goofy trim wheel? Maybe Bluejet doesn’t have any of these...never saw any difference in a trim wheel.

Have you flown an NG? I thought I had a vague recollection of your 737 experience being in a -200.

I’m pretty sure the bus I was on was an ex NWA bird. It’s amazing how rare an Airbus is in my travels.

So, why didn't they re-wing the 321 for the NEOLR?

The LR does not / did not need a new wing to support the MTOW growth, but the MTOW growth definitely came at the expense of takeoff performance and cruise fuel burn. Fortunately for Airbus, both are still well within acceptable limits.

Airbus can get away with another 3-5T of MTOW growth on the existing A321neo platform before it's fully tapped out. Above that, it will require a new wing.

Really? o_O Cus this doesn't look like much fun:

I flew the -200 which was loud as sin for a .75-ish airplane. I plumbed on the 727 which was earsplitting for a .80 airplane.

Same nose.

There are two Avionics Cool fans systems. There High Efficiency one costs about $50K more and is very, very quiet. The non efficient one... not so quiet, but cheaper.

Wait, hold on.

Are you insulting the 727?

You see, son, here on the internet, there are two planes you're not allowed to ever question: The A320, and the 727. You know why? Because Northwest flew both of them, and they came delivered from the Gods themselves, enshrined in the smell of Lutefish and Stanley Cup playoff hockey!

It's a photo from the internet, but these are the 'old style' trim wheels, indicative of an "early" 320:

Help me out here, what's the new trim wheel look like? Because I think this is the only one I've ever seen, including in brand new A321's.

There isn't white stripes going around the wheel, there or just white "blocks" on the current trim wheel.
