This. Don't let him waste one dollar of his money until he can be sure he can get a medical. That being said....with 2 DUI's and the last one being quite a few years ago, he *should* be ok. I know a few people who are professional pilots who have similar black marks that are quite a bit more recent than 8 years ago and are able to get a medical (with some hoops to jump through, but a medical nonetheless).I'd be up front with the guy and tell him to get his medical right away.
Hi, have you looked around lately? He can probably do it, but does he want to live an uphill battle the rest of his career if he can even get an interview?
I've been out of the "I'll give my left kidney for an interview" world since 2013. That bad huh.Hi, have you looked around lately?
Seriously though, I know a guy who failed an assortment of checkrides, had at least one DUI, and ran an airplane out of fuel and landed on a major highway and he's at Mesa now.

Agreed, but we're not talking about one failed checkride here. Multiple DUI's? I wish him the best. That bad, yes, but that good for someone who maybe made some mistakes a few years ago.
My point is that I hate it when people tell someone who's just starting out "You should give up."
Let them make that choice.
I flight instruct on the side and have very motivated guy wanting to getting his private. He has I believe 2 DUI's. The last one was 8 years ago. Is he out of luck? I am to lazy to look it up right now, so if someone knows that would be great.
