I flight instruct on the side and have very motivated guy wanting to getting his private. He has I believe 2 DUI's. The last one was 8 years ago. Is he out of luck? I am to lazy to look it up right now, so if someone knows that would be great.

His ability to obtain a medical is not your problem.

If he can't, you may not want to take him on. That's your only decision.

I'd be up front with the guy and tell him to get his medical right away.
This. Don't let him waste one dollar of his money until he can be sure he can get a medical. That being said....with 2 DUI's and the last one being quite a few years ago, he *should* be ok. I know a few people who are professional pilots who have similar black marks that are quite a bit more recent than 8 years ago and are able to get a medical (with some hoops to jump through, but a medical nonetheless).

He WILL be able to obtain one if he jumps through all the hoops and is really wanting to go for it. And can abstain from alcohol. Apply for a medical. if the BAC is below x (dont remember the number at the moment), then they will defer to the FAA. The FAA will send the applicant a letter of all the steps and requirements. the Applicant will have to respond within 30 days. Do the applicable steps.

If the last one is less than 12 months, he will have to wait at a minimum of one year to apply for the medical.

He can probably do it, but does he want to live an uphill battle the rest of his career if he can even get an interview?

Hi, have you looked around lately?

Seriously though, I know a guy who failed an assortment of checkrides, had at least one DUI, and ran an airplane out of fuel and landed on a major highway and he's at Mesa now.
I've been out of the "I'll give my left kidney for an interview" world since 2013. That bad huh.

That bad, yes, but that good for someone who maybe made some mistakes a few years ago.

My point is that I hate it when people tell someone who's just starting out "You should give up."

Let them make that choice.

Agreed, but we're not talking about one failed checkride here. Multiple DUI's? I wish him the best.

A DUI over ten years old with a impeccable history thereafter a lot of airlines will work with that, two I really don't know because depending on the circumstances it might indicate a deeper issue with decision making and/or substance abuse.

I really don't know. It's really going to all depend on a lot of other factors above and beyond the DUI.
