Proposed Runway at FLL

Read this story about a proposed runway design at FLL. At first glance it seems "crazy", a runway that changes elevation 64.5 feet (1.3 deg over an 8000ft runway).

After thinking about it though, Seattle's runways are slopped at .8 deg and change elevations just as much:

34R TZDE = 346.8ft / 16L TZDE = 432.5
34C TZDE = 363ft / 16C TZDE = 429.6ft
34L TZDE = 356.3ft / 16R TZDE = 415ft

Might not be as "bad" as it looks at first glance:

They can't find a flat area in Florida? I don't think people would expect it here and could cause problems just based on expectations.

A 1.3 degree slope for a runway isn't that bad. Keep in mind, the landing zone on both ends may be more flat than that too.

Perhaps they ran into a garbage dump? I know the one at KPMP sticks out like a sore thumb.

I haven't flown into PMP, but does this garbage dump/landfill have a Power Plant/Stack on it? If so, we do work at that facility on their stack.

Been a few years since I flew out of there and I do not remember.

That was always my point of reference when flying into PMP.
I always thought the new pilots flying in were funny.

Tower: Fly over and report the landfill.
Pilot: I'm new to the area. I can't find the landfill.
Tower: It is the only hill in Florida!
Pilot: ...
