"Power tie" or no?

Interview this week...what are your thoughts on a red tie? Some say it's a power tie and not to wear it...I bought it with the crazy notion that I liked it and thought it looked nice on me. Anybody care enough to comment in a productive way?

I've worn different color ties to different interviews, including red, and was offered the job at each one. Not sure if I buy the whole "power tie" nonsense. If it looks professional and isn't stained with last weeks burrito droppings, go for it. If they're going to turn you away because of your tie you probably don't want to work there.

Congrats on the interview and good luck, let us know how it turns out!

Wear what will make you feel the best. If you think the red tie looks nice on you, wear it and it will give you more confidence.

As for power ties: If a completely weak, milquetoast type of guy wears a red tie, the mythical power will not turn him into Clint Eastwood.

If a truly powerful man wears a Hello Kitty tie, it will not detract from his awesomeness.

It's all on the inside. Confidence and such. Good luck.

I did the last 3 interviews with a blue shirt, navy suit, and gray/black tie. Actually, with the last one, I didn't even wear the tie!

Honestly though, I recommend a tie, but don't be afraid to wear something that suits you. No need to go in dressed like everyone else; you'll have plenty of time to do that when you're not competing for a job. ;)

Blue suit, white shirt, maroon/red tie, your pick on shoe color, and dress socks. That's all you need, ESPECIALLY if you're going to United (eventually).

Nah seriously, everyone wearing the exact same thing looks ridiculous. Yes, I know what the old interview advice says, but the blue suit/white shirt/power tie thing is extremely trite. Eeeeveryone does it, and you don't stand out if you're just copying everyone else.

You're not yet in a uniform; be conservative, but show them that you have some personality. Hasn't steered me wrong. WacoFan's advice is spot on.

My best advice on dressing well is to never listen to pilots on the issue. I'd say we, as a group, have worse fashion sense than most, especially when it comes to business attire.

I never really bought into the notion that wearing a plain white dress shirt with a red or blue tie almost guarantees you the job, and anything else is an automatic disqualification and the interviewers will make fun of you.

At my last interview, I wore a light gray plaid suit with a blue, large check gingham shirt and a plain yellow tie. I had mahogany shoes on with polka dot socks. I was offered a position. This is a government position, by the way. For my current, soon-to-be previous job, I wore a blue striped shirt with a blue tie and a charcoal pinstripe suit. Got the jerb. Same for the last interview several years ago.

What matters is if you are groomed. If you go out and buy a super expensive suit, but you don't shave for four days (beards are an exception), don't brush your hair/teeth and generally look bad, you won't get the job. On the same note, if your clothes are all stained and gross that looks bad, too.

Wearing a red tie doesn't give you any sort of whimsical power. It's just looking like you know how to dress/groom yourself and commanding yourself with an air of confidence. Just don't be too cocky.

Edit: Come to think of it, if you dress like everyone else, you may not stand out as much as someone who dresses differently. Don't think about it too hard, though. You're a dude. Clothes that fit and don't have stains = good.

Yeah that's what I was referring to.

Also reminded me of "If I didn't get a bag of brown M&Ms, Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night..."

My interview at Southernjets, they told me to feel free to take off the coat, loosen my tie and relax.

So I did.
