Pot Smokin' Pilots

Wow--Comment promoted to full thread--I am honored -- usually I'm ignored for being an old fart.....

Anyway--

Following the rules now because someone decided to take up aviation has exactly what to do with how they acted and what they did two years ago?

Two years is a long time. Things change. People change.
Judgment call--I think it has everything to do with what they did 2 years ago. 2 years is a long time to a 20 year old not a 43 year old. 2 years ago was yesterday to me and no I don't believe people change. I believe they grow and while I certainly applaud this young man for his honesty, it is an early example of poor judgment--especially carrying and being caught.

At least he's not driving down the road windows down, blaring radio, whiskey bottle in hand and a dead hooker in the trunk. But what the hey, that was along time ago right?People Change! ;)

Anywho--right or wrong, agree or disagree--Possessing (using, carrying, whatever) the Pot is illegal so it's an own risk kind of thing. Getting caught with it means you deal with the consequences (like not being able to be a pilot but Running for President:D).

I smoked some green stuff in High School. I heard it was called Mary Jane or something:o Then I went in the Air Force and never wanted to risk Leavenworth. Tried it a few times in college, but I was just too busy to mess with the stuff. I never felt any overwhelming desire to continue doing it at any point.

I really liken weed to alcohol. Neither is worse than the other IMO, except one is illegal. In fact, I would rather have a pilot up front that was stoned the night before than one that had gotten puking drunk personally. Of course, I would prefer neither.

There is an argument that weed is a "Gateway Drug"; you are more likely to do other drugs if you have done weed. I took a substance abuse class in college that did some studies on this and found it to be untrue. 95% of people who have smoked weed have never done any other drug. However, 100% of people who have done something else have done weed. The pro "gateway drug" peeps only bring up the second sentence.

If we want to make something illegal because it is addicting and a gateway drug, consider this: Close to 100% of people that smoke cigarettes have smoked weed.
