Pot Smokin' Pilots

What I can't figure out is how a person, knowing or wanting to be a pilot, would smoke dope--knowing that it is potentially a "deal breaker". Do people actually think things through anymore?

Two years is a long time. Things change. People change.

I'm sure he'll get a medical. I know someone who's done worse things than pot & now flies commercial. Granted, it was a long time ago when he did it.

Exactly. Those that don't realize that, frankly don't have much life experience.

This isn't even a valid question from an AME in the first place... Douglas, are you sure you have the right story? Sounds more like he admitted to a conviction, which is a totally different story (and a very valid question on the medical form).

What AME performs a drug test anyway? When we piss on the paper strip, they're checking for sugar levels which are indicative of diabetes. There is NO drug test involved with a medical. Drug tests are performed for the 135/121 guys, but it's different than the AME (one pre-employment, then randomly selected afterwards).

Re: Smoked pot in the last two years.

I know many of you will kring at this, but here it goes. Lie, if you can pass a drug test, meaning, you have smoked dope in the last few years and it has been longer then lets say a few months and you plan on very doing it again, why confess. Two years for weed, come on. We all go through our early 20's, late teen years. I might have been lucky, but who knows, In college I played sports, I passed my NCAA required drug tests. But I might have smoked some cheeba over the years. Have not done it since the late 90's. But I was told by the older players, only ansewer questions that you can be caught in a lie with truthfully and the rest be vague. And yes a few of my fellow teammates are in jail, college football what do you expect.

Re: Smoked pot in the last two years.

You miss the point, there are people that have smoked pot and people that are smoking pot. I meant to say, why throw yourselves into a s***storm if you don't need to. I can not believe that no one has ever told a lie. I know of a few guys that have failed drug tests, that is wrong. Why would you not want me to fly your family, I know of a few recovering alcoholics that fly for the majors, they seem to be okay, I have over 3000 accident free hours, an ATP and 3 type ratings. So what if I smoked some weed like 10 years ago. But i do agree don't lie on an appilcation, but look at the question at ansewer it.

Because pilots- nay all people must be perfect dammit! That is all that fits into my limited view of the world. Much like a Mortal Combat, "Flawless Victory!", so much your life be as a pilot and before. After all, I am very dumb, and I believe all this.

Its not the dope smoking that bugs me.

Its the "you can do it so long as you don't get caught"

Re: Smoked pot in the last two years.

As stated, why bother admitting to it if they cannot prove otherwise??? Go ahead and claim that's not a professional attitude, but you're not hurting anyone.

Truthfully, I'd have NO problem with a pilot using weed while say on furlough. The herb is pretty benign compared to other drugs that people use, legally or otherwise.

Flame away.

It should be legal, but it's not. Laws might not be to your liking, but suck it up and follow the rules.

Re: Smoked pot in the last two years.

Have any of you read the part on the 8500-7 about " all the above is true" if you lie or "not say anything", you can go to jail or pay a fine if it you get caught!

And if you decide to "omit" the said information keep your enemies close and your ex's closer!!;)

yes, that came to my mind, but i think for some people it comes down to I've invested so much in my career, and have no backup. In most cases I think you would have to damn near have a medical incident in a cockpit. Im pretty sure the FAA cant go around pulling random medical records.

Not yet anyway.

Re: Smoked pot in the last two years.

Wow...I'm disappointed I didn't get such a full and open response when I asked a question about pot last week....

...just awkward...thinly veiled, accusatory questions...

What was your question again?

Because it leads to harder stuff. It is the gateway drug! Remember, just say no ...on the ap. :D
