with in such a close proximity of the airport and mountains, they should have been getting vectored. It boggles me how can the veer off track and collide with the mountain. Unless they stalled the airplane, i would assume they are using AP in such kind of weather.

Come out to NJC and over a few beers I will tell you about a time seating in a T7 jumpseat that the crew lost SA on the downwind on a VFR day(they both had no clue where the airport was).
