Hello, my name is Mike and have gotten accepted into Ameriflight training. Towards the end of October, once I have finished training, I should be based in Portland. Anyone know of a room for rent or crashpad or areas that I should avoid?? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

When I lived in Portland working of Horizon, I lived across the river in Vancouver, WA.
The Cascade Apartments on 10th St (Just off Mill Plain Blvd) are nice apts and "cheap" $600/month for one bedroom. It's 15/20 mins to the airport and you can be a WA resident (No state income tax).

if you can stand a little commute Tigard and Tualatin are really nice spots.

Tanasbourne (Hillsboro) is nice, problem is that rents are going up to the $700-$800 for a one bedroom. Tualatin, Tigard, Beaverton, all very nice too, but all of these are a 25 minute plus commute to PDX depending on traffic.
Best bet, Vancouver. No state income tax, just sales tax, rents aren't totally sky high. So do like a lot of people do and double-dip by shopping in Oregon to avoid sales tax. My brother lives in Crystal Creek, nice place, not sure if it will be the least inexpensive. Really, you want to live closer to I-205 if you can, I-5 bridge traffic is killer, especially with the construction.

I will second M.Pilot's suggestion there and to stay away from that east-east area of Portland.
I appreciate the advice from everyone. I'm thinking of buying a place out there and renting out the rooms. Haven't decided completely but I've found some really nice mobile homes/manufactured homes that are quite reasonable with 3 or 4 bedrooms so just thinking about it for right now. I'm most likely going to go roommate with someone until I get settled in and find the right deal. Thanks to everyone again.

17 minutes from opening my garage door until walking through the hanger door at PDX!In all seriousness, are you planning on trying to commute while junior on the Ameriflight schedule? (I only ask because you mention crashpad.) Being junior in PDX will mean you will could likely end up on 1925, a 6 day per week run, commuting would be pretty much impossible!
As far as places to live, like SurferLucas mentioned, there are some pretty nice apartments in Vancouver, where you will get more for your money, and have no taxes. However, if you are young, single, and want some form of social life, you will probably find yourself driving into Portland anyways, so why not live there!
As for places to look in Vancouver, the Cascades Neighborhood, rougly 10th and Ellsworth. Also look in the Fishers Landing area, between 162nd and 192nd Ave, there are some pretty decent place with a fair amount of space for sub 700 a month.
