Pilot Sidejobs or Business

I do photography on the side. Started out as a hobby, but little by little it has turned into a side business, with special events, wildlife and auto racing. I plan on upgrading equipment, getting the proper documentation and making a full fledged side business once my flying career gets settled. Doesn't pay enough to fall back on, but the extra income is certainly nice. I made $800 on one Saturday doing a retirement dinner. Thats a months paycheck at the Flight School I work for.

Just out of curiosity, how did you get the ball rolling on the photography thing? My wife is thinking about doing that to supplement our income.

I wanted to as well, but alas, I can't afford the digi SLR. If she decides to get into, I don't know if she's already started putting ideas together, but I had learned some cool backround kind of things.

Last time I flew on Southwest I found a F/O who was a OBGNY (Gynecologyst)!!! was 42.. and still did it on his days off.. And I just smiled!! Cause I am in 2nd year of medical school (dont ask me why..lol) But I now know that I will have time for training and even a chance to fly a jet...if decide to try.. lol
I know as a doctor I will be able to affoard flying and even buying and airlplane.. maybe one of those small bussines jets that are coming out some day... But I would love to Put my hands on a B737 at least some day..
OO and talking about B737.. has anyone here every tried that Airline training orientation program that they have at Continental???
I am thinking in going there
http://www.b737.com .. is it worth it??..

What kind of doc you gonna be or are you full of it?

- Its OBGYN not OBGNY
- Its gynecologist not gynocologyst

If you are for real, I hope you choose a very lucrative speciality because docs dont make what they used to in several areas. I have a father and brother who are docs and I personally deal with atleast 5 a day in my profession.

I was about to say the same thing. Docs are a lot like pilots in the sense that everyone thinks they hardly work, make mega-bucks, and get all the girls (which docs do get, but it usually involves something repelling, not attracting)

In reality, most doctors exit medical school with about $200,000 in debt. Then they get to go through the wonderful residents phase, just barely scraping by. Eventually they may be hired into their "dream-job" only to find out that if they want to be a good quality doctor they'll need much more the 15mins a patient, and will end up spending a lot longer time with them (and to make a personal bond/get family history). Sadly they will not be paid for their extra time like coming in off the clock to update charts and lab.

Or a doctor could start their only practice only to have a heart attack and die once he sees the cost of malpractice insurance.

Not a very good life if you ask me. But, of course, there are the exceptions...

Well.. first.. yeah.. sorry for not getting the words right!!.. hey! give me a break!. English its my second language..
Then:. money issues, No problem for me!!!! :) . Yes, US medical graduates Average $120,000dlls for loans at the end of their careers, but it wont happent to me, because I am studying at Montemorelos university medical school. A med school in mexico... And if you ask me why.. Well. many reasons.. Its less years.. I live on campus, nice place, nice enviroments, you get a lot of Hands on experience compared to the US (Because insurance and all that stuff, you all know).. And My parents are staff here :) , which means that on top of the low tuition cost (13k a year) I get a discount of 80%.. cause my parents are doctors and teach at the med school..lol. So. do the math.. Pretty good deal for me.. But thats beside the point..
And what kind of doctor do I want to be... Either Neurosurgery or OBGYN... and yeah, both of them take a lot of time.. and I would probably not have the chance nor time to fly for a regular airline. (but hey.. Dreaming doesnt cost anything..lol)
BUT about money making to affoard buying an airplane, I am honestly not worried about that. ALL my auncles and aunts from my dads side 8 of them are docs, and 2 nurses... and all (except nurses) make above 300k.. So that should be enough to At least own or regulary fly a C172...
ITs true.. that when I go to the states for Residency, pay will be low.. like 40k a year... and I would only be able to live by.. but after that .. things get better.
And some of you guys think and yeah It happens sometimes, but It can be managed, The time issue. Time you will end up spending with your kids if you work a lot just to make money or whatever reason.
I am telling you first hand, my mom Its an OBGYN and my dad is a Pathologist... and my mom its the type of doctor that yeah.. can spend more than 1 hour with patient depending on her needs.. and yeah.. you will probably wont see 50 patients in a day if you do that.. but she would see around 13-20 patients a day depending on the day.. or whatever.. plus surgeries some days.. And would always come home for lunch.. and supper..
And yeah this was an exceptional case, cause the hospital its like 5 minutes away from home.. and everything its close by.. and Even tough she didnt see many many patients per day.. She made $$$$.. trust me... She did..... One freeking surgery. and you got $$$..
BUt anyways... just trying to encourage myself that everything its posible in life!!:. hey come on guys!! help me out...lol... jk... but yeah.. I Think its possible, NOT EASY,, but reachable..:)
hey.. you got Lawyers-pilots, Why not Doctor-pilots.. lol.. Of course not flying for an airline but owning an airplane or so.... lol..
Big dreams for Big people...
Aim to the stars.. and you will reach the moon!!... :)

She's been shooting and putting her stuff up on Flickr with a Fuji Finepix 2000. I think we've finally settled on the Canon Rebel XT for the SLR. It's got about the same features as the 30D and hundreds of dollars cheaper. We're gonna take that extra hundreds and spend it on a good lens.

Here's the link to some of her stuff:

I dont know what docs in Mexico earn and I am not sure I want a doc working on me that had "less time" in school. In the US only the top percent of physicians earn 300K gross. My father's practice grosses over 700K a year. After malpractice, staffing, and other dues he makes less than 200K.

bartending, crappy work (for most ppl) but part-time positions are plentiful. It does not bring in that much dough though.

there was an american capt who owned a billiards/bar in jersey i used to play at. he hired some high school kids to work it. There was a guy who bought a bunch of nasty apartments, rented them, and made some really nice cash off of it. he was known as the "slum lord" but do what ya gotta do to pay the bills. i met one guy who owned a landscaping business on the side of being a pilot and he "said" he made more from the landscaping then he did flying. i dunno if i completely believe it but who knows.

We have a UAL 777 pilot who does the MX at my work.

MikeD, are you still in the Vegas area? Good to see you back around man.

Thanks! Am back down in Tucson, AZ now. I go work up in the Vegas area about 1 week per quarter now.

I've heard of airline pilots doing everything from truck driving to medicine in addition to piloting.
