It's been about 18 months, but if we pick up new aircraft soon it will rise to like 2-3 years due to different PIC requirements.

Further to my 1st question, what FAA requirements need to be met to be Captain in an a/c that size?

Here in Australia, to fly as Captain in an a/c above 5,700kg (roughly 12,500lbs) pilots need to hold an ATP Licence and have 1500 hrs Total Time, and to fly as Captain on scheduled flights, 500 multi-command is also a requirement. Is similar to the FAA regs?

That is exactly similar to the FAA regulations. However there are also insurance requirements that say at least 3,000 hours total time are needed, as well as other requirements such as time in aircraft and what not.
