Phraseology in International Air Transport Operations

Used to tell my trainees; correct phraseology will never get you in trouble and save you many times in your career.

Trying to explain to a prosecutor/jury/judge why you sounded folksy, macho, crappy and stupid on the freq, during a crash investigation, will quite possibly ruin your career in an instant.

In regards to the lower transition levels, a lot of guys will say, Level zero nine zero, when correct is level nine zero. I've had controllers think we were turning to a heading of 090 because of non standard phraseology. Headings have proceeding zeros, flight levels do not.
The only thing the controller hears is 090 and that's not an altitude.

Simple. C3 comms.

Clear/Concise/Correct.

Think before you key up, not during it. And avoid the filler words that mean nothing or are redundant. Like starting all calls with "And", or fillers like "with you" or "checking in", among others.

You’d think that’d be the case, but no. Don’t know how it grinds my gears to hear guys just ramble on. “On board with you,” is another one that is teeth clenching.

Got him on the fish finder... Do you really think there are fish finder separation standards?

Ready in sequence... Who cares? There are 8 other aircraft between you and the runway.

Ah, Ah, Ah... Please think about what you're going to say before locking up the frequency.

2522 on the magic box... ahhhhh!

With a flash (ident)... Who comes up with that crap?

Do you want me to comply with that there restriction?... Usually comes shortly after the word Southwest.

.

With a flash!

"FLASH" is actually in the Joint-Service Brevity manual. Means to activate specified system.....IFF, etc.

However the irony is that its really not brevity. When ATC tells you to IDENT, responding with "Identing" or "with a flash" isn't truly brevity. Pressing the IDENT button on the box and the controller seeing it in response to his request, is.
