Phoenix Pilots - KPHX

Not a lot off interesting transmissions happen at Ednburgh airport which is my local airport.

PHX is always busy thats why I love flying into there. I have found that if you are professional, quick, and correct on the radio you can get into Sky Harbor when they usually don't let VFR in when to busy. Last time in there they put me on RWY 8 I followed something big and fast with another something big and fast on my butt. Gotta luv 172 max foward speed than chop and drop the flaps than slam on the brakes and get off. I would much rather go to Sky Harbor than the other little airports. To many "Come to Jesus" mid air's at DVT

Well FRACK! its windy in PHX today as of 2356Z info Whisky. Wind was 260 @ 25knts. gusting to 30 knts. An low level windshear advisorys are in affect....I just love having ATIS phone number!
NightCago what kind of equipment do you fly?

Man I've flown like 6 legs out of PHX and I know 2 things about Phoenix Tower. They are some of the best busy airport controllers I know but DO NOT do two things...
1) Advise them you have a "good gate" when you do not. If you do not have a good gate you go to the penalty box and you stay there until you do. Lying helps no one...
2) Do not try and switch runways on tower frequency. The controllers are probably on opposite sides of the cab. Tell your captain that if he wants to play at the nations 5th busiest airport, he can land at Deer Valley if he wants a different runway.

Apparently the PHX tower recently underwent an efficiency audit by the FAA to determine if they could increase their capacity. It was found that 8/26 wasn't being utilized enough for departures given we have as much airspace as we need around here, we don't have to worry about departure in-trail spacing.

I interupted a guys breakfast this morning...
Me "Ground Shuttle XXX Checkpoint 1, spot M good gate"
Them "T chomp chomp right C slurp M gate good day"

He didn't even say Tango, Charley or Mike...he just said, T, C, M good day.

I don't miss Philly at all...

What does good gate mean when you say it to ATC?

They needed an audit to see that one???? I drive past KPHX everyday to an fro from work an home!
During any push from either I-10 or SR 143 you can see a long, long line up of airliners in que for takeoff on 25R or 7L depending on traffic.
8/26 is ALWAYS,ALWAYS a ghost town with the occasional B-1900 or Dash-8 takeoff and every so often a America West mainline jet will depart.
It always baffled me cause 8/26 is the longest runway on field and is majorly, majorly under used!

From what I could gather listening, Good Gate is what the pilots will say once they know their assigned gate is free and they can taxi into the gate. I Think

Doug, anyone else?????

"Good Gate" isn't in the AIM...

Due to the congestion along the north side of Terminal 4, we're required to check in with ramp control (125.57 for those of you with a scanner) prior to approaching the ramp area to check on the status of our gate. Our folks up in Mission Control check on it for us and say, "good gate, cross spot X to the gate". We then call back ground and let ground know if we have a gate or not. If not, they find a place to hide us, if we do they'll issue taxi instructios as necessary.

I was sitting ready reserve today and got to watch the 2pm rush hour ensue while I was looking for lunch. What a disaster...worse than Philly...

Matthew-
Sorry it took so long to respond as I've been out on the road this week. I currently fly a Lear 35 based out of the LA area.

The more I fly into PHX, I am finding that the controllers are really cool if you arrive/depart at non-peak times. We can pretty much get any runway we want in the early AM!

Otherwise, its their way, or no way.

Oh no prob anyone know what hours non peak times are in KPHX.
I'm getting into work at 5am (along with the ABX,UPS and FEDEX flights who are prolly looking forward to a well deserved days sleep

) so don't really get to see much evidence of a morning push.
But noon and late afternoon when I get out of work (2-3pm) seem unusually busy as well as like 6-9pm.

Probably so. Each airline and each airport have their own local lingo they use.

You'll hear "Delta jet on fox, turn left, scenic route" in Chicago (not anymore), or "17 left, JAR" in Dallas or "8 right, loop" or "taxi via the inner, hold short of dixie" in Atlanta. None of that stuff is in the AIM, of course!

We've got a 'gate keeper' in Atlanta. It's a frequency that we call in-range to confirm the gate assignment that was given via ACARS on the in-range report. You can call in the air, but things change fast and are pretty dynamic so I generally call on the ground to confirm the gate. Something like "1119, confirming gate A19" and he'll reply "A19's a good gate" or "You're going to D35 now".

Otherwise, if there's a gate change, you didn't confirm your assignment and Atlanta's on a east-bound operation, you're going to be in for a very scenic tour of the ramp.

When I used to arrive back to PHX from ABQ on my weekend night runs at 0200, PHX tower would let me beat up the pattern with touch and goes before I landed if I liked! Not many people you talk to regularly know the TPA for KPHX, since they rarely use it.
