easy .. just put ADF INOP over the dial!!! Seeing as most NDB are being non commisioned!! (I know, if only it was that simple!!!)
The overuse of the compass when partial panel is a more general issue. Sure it's "primary" (primary/supporting) or the "performance" (control/performance) instrument since it's the only instrument that tells you your heading (assuming no GPS which can give you course or track which may be even better), but it also dances around making it pretty unsuitable for the purpose of maintaining direction. The best trick I learned while flying Partial Panal VOR tracking (from a JC Instructoris once your on course, you can keep the VOR needle centered WITHOUT LOOKING AT YOUR COMPASS. Just make small heading changes using your turn coordinator and watching the VOR needle changes and rate of changes.

I do an exercise with instrument students and pilots in which I have them set a heading full panel. Then we cover the AI, DG and the compass, with the sole goal being to maintain straight flight using the coordinator. We do this for 3-5 minutes and then uncover the compass and DG. We're rarely more than 5-10 degrees off. The idea is to show how little you need the compass as a "control" instrument that you make the central part of a scan.
