Part 61 Changes

Does anyone have a guide to the part 61 changes? I read the FAA one but quite honestly they lost me with regards to instrument currency and the combination of AATD, SIM and airplane... Also I heard the student pilot cert is now good for as long as their medical...

Thanks

I just went through this and I have a few questions as well. Here is my take. Correct me if I'm wrong.

1. If you use an airplane to stay current, nothing has changed.

2. If you use an FTD/flight simulator to stay current, nothing has changed.

3. If you use an ATD to stay current, you are now only current for two months and you have to log 3.0 hours and accomplish 4 unusual attitude recoveries (2 nose-high, 2 nose-low) in addition to the usual requirements.

4. If you use a combination of all three, you don't have to log the 3.0 hours or do the unusual attitude recoveries. Log 6 approaches and a hold in the ATD and at least one approach and a hold in an airplane or FTD/flight simulator.

5. If you use a combination of the FTD/flight simulator, and an ATD, there is no benefit, as you would have to do six approaches and a hold in each. You might as well just stop after you do them in the FTD because you are current.

My only question is in the wording of 61.57(c)(4) regarding the 3-way combo. It says

"...in an aircraft and a flight simulator, flight training device, and aviation training device"

in the italic header, but then immediately says

"...combination of an aircraft, flight simulator or flight training device, and aviation training device"

Based on the intent of the reg (IMO), the second wording is correct and the first should be changed.

There's also the meaningless change in the definition of cross country from "at least" 50 nm to "more than" 50nm

Proposed changes also include removing the 10 hour complex airplane requirement for Commercial and substituting it with 10 hours "advanced" instrument training, but there are those on this board who believe that change won't happen for a couple of years, if it happens at all

The proposed changes are in an entirely different change proposition.

For what has officially changed, here is the link to the FAA document. http://edocket.access.gpo.gov/2009/pdf/E9-25133.pdf

Ok, here is one for you. I know this was brought up within the last few months, but it doesn't appear to have changed. In the 2009 FAR/AIM, in reference to advanced ground instructor privelages, an AGI can 'provide ground instruction for any certificate or rating'. (bear with me, I do not have the book here at work) I asked the FAA inspector that I did my CFI initial with in May about this, and he said that was not the 'FAA's intent', and that one must have an IGI cert. to provide ground instruction for an instrument rating, and that the FAR's will change this wording in the next revision. (2010). It was recently posted on here the changes that were forthcoming in the 2010 FAR/AIM. I purchased a 2010 FAR/AIM last weekend, and in 61, it STILL shows that an AGI can 'provide ground instruction for any certificate or rating.' It hasn't changed that I see. does anyone have the list of changes that was posted on here a few months ago?

Thanks!

It just didn't make the publishing date for the hardcopy FAR/AIM's. Same thing happened last year with the change in medical certificate durations. If you check the regulation online at www.gpoaccess.gov/ecfr , it's there.

On the FOI/AGI prep materials they make it clear that "any certificate or rating" means any certificate or rating except the instrument rating.
